Times Asian University Rankings and QS Asian University rankings in 2015 were released in June, where universities in China have delivered very good performances, including Wuhan University, which has seen a steady rise in the lists.

There are 21 universities in China in the TOP 100 according to Times Higher Education Asian University rankings, 2015, exceeding Japan as the NO.1 Asian higher education country. In the list, Peking University ranked 4th, Tsinghua University 5th and Wuhan University up by 15 places to and impressive 49th place.

25 universities in mainland China are in the top 100 in QS Asian University rankings and 110 in the top 300, surpassing other Asian countries with a record new high. Peking University ranked top among mainland Chinese universities. Wuhan University rose from 63rd place in 2014 to the 58th, while registering leaps from the 111th, 79th, 70th, and the 63th place respectively, between 2011 and 2014. Wuhan University has been in the top 400 in three university rankings in recent years, namely ARWU, QS World University Rankings and THE World University Rankings, and the rising position shows its growing competitiveness and influence around the world.

According to Times Higher Education, “China has overtaken Japan as Asia’s number one nation for producing top universities. This year, many of China’s universities are rising up the table. The shift in power towards China takes place against a backdrop of investment in research and development, which witnessed an annual growth of 18% since 2011 (ruling out the factor of price). Now it is starting to pay off. The results are certain to be good news for China.”

Background Information:

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a British company specializing in education and study abroad.

At first, it cooperated with the Times Higher Education to release annual world university rankings, the THE-QS World University Rankings, However, it ended its partnership with Times after the release of their 2009 rankings. Ever since, both have worked out their separate rankings with QS using the same methodology while Times, which has since then been cooperating with Thomson Reuters, using an adjusted one. Now, the rankings published by QS are known as the QS World University Rankings.

Generally, the QS World University Rankings is regarded as one of the three most influential university rankings in the world, along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities(ARWU). The  World University Ranking is generally based on the range of university activities, teaching and research, knowledge transfer, international outlook, impact and reputation.
