Liu Yandong Visits Confucius Institute at Pittsburgh

On June 19th, Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council visited the Confucius Institute at University of Pittsburgh, co-established by Wuhan University and University of Pittsburgh, where she enjoyed students’ performances and delivered a speech.

She firstly visited the office area of the Confucius Institute, attened an exhibition showcasing exhibits produced by the students, and then jointed the demonstration class presented by volunteer teachers and zero-based students. She also had with representatives of students and teachers.

Later, students of the Confucius Institute put on a fantastic show. Some spoke affectionately in Chinese about learning Chinese; some recited the well-known Chinese love poem To the Oak; and some sang the popular Chinese song Welcome to Beijing. The brilliant performance won tremendous applause. Liu said, “I am deeply impressed by the wonderful performance and fluent Chinese you speak. I see a bright future of friendship between China and America.”

Liu also invited students from the Confucius Institute to China for the Chinese Summer Camp, and gifted the Confucius Institute with 1000 books on Chinese culture, which, She hoped would enhance the teaching level and quality of CI-Pitt and help maintain the good relationship between the two countries.

Liu spoke highly of the Institute’s teaching achievements. The Confucius Institute at University of Pittsburgh had won the title “Advanced Confucius Institute”  three times. With 7 subordinated Confucius Classes, 399 Chinese teaching classes, 4571 students, covering 19 counties from Pennsylvania to Ohio, it contributes to mutual dialogue and friendship between two countries.

The Confucius Institute at University of Pittsburgh is the first Confucius Institute in Pennsylvania, set up by the Wuhan University and the University of Pittsburgh in May 2007. Excellent volunteer teachers sent by Wuhan University offer Chinese courses and cultural academic activities to schools in Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas. With constant and rapid development, the Confucius Institute has become an important bridge between Pennsylvania and China both in terms of cultural exchange and communication. On May 7th 2015, Han Jin, WHU’s chair of the university council renewed the contract with the President of the University of Pittsburgh Patrick Gallagher on building a joint Confucius Institute, marking a new stage in building overseas Confucius Institutes by WHU.
