Wuhan University Taking the Lead in the First International Symposium on Human Resources and Remuneration Management

On July 11th, the first International Symposium on Human Resources and Remuneration Management kicked off at the FLTRP International Conference Center in Beijing. Sponsored by China Association of Higher Education and organized by Beijing Foreign Studies University, the symposium gathered 424 human resource experts from home and abroad, including Zhenyuan Qu, Chairman of China Association of Higher Education, Shuli Liao, Deputy Director of the HR Department of the Ministry of Education, Danling Zhao, Sub-inspector of the HR Department of the Ministry of Education, Shengyao Jiang, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Youmei Feng, Executive Vice President of Wuhan University. Notably, over 10 experts and scholars from renowned overseas institutions also participated in this symposium, including Kyle Cavanaugh, Vice President of Duke University, and Denis Fred Simon, Executive Vice Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University.

One highlight of the symposium was the 4 sub-forums. Under the topic of “Talent Employment and Remuneration Incentive Mechanism in Higher Education”, the second sub-forum, organized by Wuhan University, was led by Youmei Feng, Executive Vice President of Wuhan University. With renowned experts and scholars present, the whole session was connected by informative presentations, heated discussions and original comments. Kyle Cavanaugh, Vice President of Duke University, delivered his presentation titled “Strategies for Recruitment, Development and Retention in Higher Education”. Detailing different efforts to recruit, develop and incentivize talents in American higher education, Mr. Cavanaugh also cited real-life examples to explain the dynamics and innovations in talent management, for example, how to find the right one for the right position, how to develop employees’ leadership and management skills, the importance of performance evaluations and the pre-determined standards in incentive pay. China Higher Education did an exclusive interview with Kyle Cavanaugh afterwards.

Denis Fred Simon, Executive Vice Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University, gave his presentation titled “Status Quo of Talents from an International Perspective: Opportunities and Challenges”. Revealing different new ideas in the recruitment and management of high-end talents due to the advancement of S&T, economic globalization, as well as the increasing importance of innovation, Dr. Simon analyzed talent crisis occurring in major developed and developing countries through the lens of population distribution and talent evaluation standards, and shared his insights on how to recruit high-quality talents in the increasingly fierce war for talents taking China’s Recruitment Program of Global Experts as an example.

Professor Yanping Li from WHU’s School of Economics and Management, gave her presentation on the incentive compensation mechanism in higher education. By comparing different compensation practices in China and abroad, Li proposed that a new incentive compensation mechanism be established, taking into account position management, competency evaluation and performance management.

At the closing ceremony, Youmei Feng summarized the highlights and achievements of the symposium and reiterated the importance of this symposium as a landmark in the ten-year development of the Remuneration Management Division of China Association of Higher Education.

Mr. Kyle Cavanaugh and Dr. Denis Simo had been invited to visit Wuhan University prior to this symposium.
