[Students Societies] Checkmate!

WHU Chess Association is one of the oldest students’ associations at Wuhan University. Its history can date back to the very beginning of the establishment of Wuhan University in 1930s when students who were interested in Chinese Chess often got together to play chess to entertain themselves and they formed a group, which was the prototype of WHU Chess Association at present. Since Chinese chess is the most traditional and most popular chess game in China, WHU Chess Association mainly focus on activities about Chinese chess.

Modern Chinese chess came into being in Song Dynasty, around 12th Century or so. It bears some resemblances to Western Chinese, but they are totally two kinds of different chess. The same as Western chess, the goal of Chinese Chess is to checkmate the rival’s King. And there are some same chess pieces in both two kinds of chess games, including King, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn. However, Mandarin and Cannon are two distinctive pieces in Chinese chess while Queen can only be found in Western chess. The rules of Chinese chess are quite simple so that it is easy to play. Because of its simplicity, almost every Chinese knows how to play Chinese Chess and more than 200 million Chinese people are fans of Chinese chess.

At Wuhan University, there are about 800 students among all grades who are interested in playing chess registering as members of Chess Association. They gather together once a week, usually at weekend, to practice playing chess and share their experience about chess with each other. The most exhilarating event of Chess Association is the series of annual Chinese chess tournament. The tournament lasts over the whole school year from September to June the next year. The competition is held on the last Sunday of each month. Winners will earn some points, ranging from 1 to 15. There are seven stations of series tournament in a year. Eight players who earn most points in seven stations in all will participate the playoff held in June, and there will be a final champion coming from these eight top players. The final champion of each year will be remembered as a legend in the history of Chess Association. That is the dream of every chess lovers at Wuhan University.

Series of WHU Chinese Chess Championship

Wuhan University always represents the top level of Chinese chess among universities in Hubei Province. From 2007 to 2013, on behalf of Wuhan University, WHU chess association participated in Hubei Provincial Chinese Chess Tournament and won team championship seven times in a row. In 2012, Huang Wenjun, a 2010-grade student from School of Foreign Language and Literature, played in the National Intellectual Game as a representative of Hubei Province, and he finally got the 6th place.

In recent years, Western Chess, Draughts and Wuzi Chess also gain its development gradually at school campus, so three branches of these chesses were founded respectively and they are growing up year by year.

Chess is a healthy game with many advantages. players can both practice their brain and make more friends by playing chess. Generations of members of WHU chess association have been making effort to promote chess games at the campus.
