Author:Liu Min  Date:2016-06-08  Clicks:

Gou Jiachen, a senior student of the Information Department, Wuhan University is now taking a year off for his journey in New Zealand, a wonderland in the South Pacific. Thanks to the working holiday program launched by the New Zealand government, Gou is able to enjoy the world’s most magnificent landscapes with less expenditure and more pleasure.

Strongly supported by his parents, Gou has been a travel enthusiast for a long time. When he first mentioned the working holiday program to his parents, they gave their approval almost immediately. Speaking of the preparation work he had made for this special tour, he found many of his past experiences quite useful. “He said “I have worked very hard to learn English, though I am not fond of it. But it turned out to be very useful for my life in New Zealand. And I like jogging. I have participated two marathons, including the one held in Queenstown, a beautiful town in the South Island of New Zealand. All these have helped me better fit in the local community.”

Gou’s first job in NZ was a masseur. Later, he became a blueberry picker on some farmlands. Working as a masseur, Gou had plenty of chances to meet many different people every single day, talking to them while soothing their physical pain. His customers were always so talkative that they would like to tell him their stories. To him, deeply communicating with the local people was very enjoyable.

Now, Gou is a salesman at the largest souvenir company in New Zealand. When he saw the employment ad from the company, he handed in his résumé and went for an interview several days later. During the interview, he was asked to promote a product in front of a customer. “I was very nervous at that time, but thanks to the manager’s friendliness and encouragement, my performance was not that bad. In fact, the interview process went much more smoothly than I expected.” Gou recalled that day, still with a sense of relief.

Sometimes, things will not go so smoothly. When Gou first arrived in the country, everything was a mystery. He could not even rent a car by himself. Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining. One of his friends knew the car dealing market very well and gave him a lot of help. With others’ help and his own diligence, his life there started to develop along the right lines.

“New Zealand is a wonderful country. The landscape, the people as well as the way they do business impressed me a lot. It is a very suitable place for living, especially for those who love outdoor activities.” According to Gou, what he saw and learnt in this country was his most precious experience that would help him set a very special starting point for his career back in China.”

To Gou, traveling has become an inseparable part of his life. To travel to as many places as possible so as to enrich himself and broaden his horizon, Gou will always be on a journey.
