Recently, the Wuhan University (WHU) Department of Sociology joined hands with SAGE—one of the most influential academic publishing groups in the United States—to issue an English periodical namedChinese Sociological Dialogue. As the very first WHU periodical written in full English as well as the third English academic periodical in China’s field of sociology, Chinese Sociological Dialogue marks the great cooperation between WHU and the SAGE Company,

This new periodical aims to dissect the social problems that occur during the social transformation that China is undergoing. It is also expected to deepen China’s communication with the world through meaningful dialogue, thus enhancing China’s worldwide influence.

Led by Lin Zeng, the head of the WHU Department of Sociology and a tenured professor of Illinois State University, the editorial board of Chinese Sociological Dialogue consists of venerable scholars coming from world-renowned universities including Harvard University and UC Berkeley. The periodical will adopt innovative results from all the sociological branches, taking quantitative and qualitative, theoretical and empirical researches into account. Meanwhile, this periodical will focus on various domains including sociology of education, time and space, economic sociology, political sociology, historical sociology, social work, and social welfare.

More and more renowned scholars have voiced their support towards this periodical. Paul. M. Evans, SAGE’s Chief Executive Officer of the Asia-Pacific area highly recognized WHU’s expertise in discipline, saying that he identifies with Chinese Sociological Dialogue’s ideas. As a famous professor of sociology in Harvard, Mr. Frank Dobbin said that he enjoyed reading the articles in Chinese Sociological Dialogue, for they had used sociology as a language to open a conversation between the Eastern and Western world. The vice chair of the Department of Sociology in UC Davis, Professor Shu Xiaoling, also congratulated Wuhan University for the assiduous work and the satisfying outcome it has displayed to the world.

The publication of Chinese Sociological Dialogue demonstrated the tremendous progress China has achieved in the field of sociology. As Mr. Zhao Dingxin, a chair professor of Chicago University and the President of the Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences in Zhejiang University, pointed out, China’s sociology has experienced the period of learning from the West, communicating with the West and is now developing independently from the West. He is firmly convinced that this periodical will lead to a lot more opportunities for China to stand on the international platform.”
