On September 10th, Prof. Yang Bisheng, from the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing in Wuhan University, was awarded the Carl Pulfrich Award 2019 in University of Stuttgart. He was awarded for proposing and further establishing “Generalized Point Cloud” intelligent information extraction in point cloud processing and 3D modeling theories and methods of multiple levels of details.

The Carl Pulfrich Award is a prestigious award in honor of Prof. Carl Pulfrich, the father of stereophotogrammetry. It is a biennially announced honor since 1968 to commend those scholars who have made great contributions to theories, methods, hardware and software systems in the field of geodesy, photogrammetry, and geo-spatial information science. This year, the Carl Pulfrich Award 2019 went to Prof. Yang Bisheng, who stood out from the voting of the reviewing committee against other six nominees.

The reviewing committee of the Carl Pulfrich Award consists of 11 members, all of whom are world-famous experts and scholars in surveying and information science. The chairperson is usually the director of the Institute of Photogrammetry in the University of Stuttgart. The award recipient is produced through deliberate selection:

The candidates are firstly nominated by the committee or recommended by other notable scholars. Then the candidate list shall be submitted to all the committee members respectively for appraisement and ranking. Afterward, one or two candidates will be selected by the committee for further discussion on their achievement to decide their final awarding. The award shall not be given if the committee failed to come to an agreement. Once an agreement is reached, the candidate will be invited to the international conference during the Photogrammetric Week and is going to be awarded the Carl Pulfrich Award at the conference.

The chair of the 2019 jury, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Sörgel, said, “I would like to congratulate Prof. Yang Bisheng on receiving this significant award and thank him for his hard work, dedication and commitment to the geospatial industry.” The world-renowned 90-year-old Prof. Fritz Ackermann, father of modern photogrammetry, attended the award ceremony and thought highly of Prof. Yang, saying, “I’m glad to see that as a representative of young generation, Yang Bisheng has made significant contributions to new technologies.”

Carl Pulfrich Award has been in close connection with the international conference during the Photogrammetric Week since its establishment. Also, the awarding has become a tradition of this century-honored meeting. This biennial gathering has attracted experts, scholars, and famous industry representatives worldwide. Li Deren, member of the Chinese Academy of Science and Prof. Yang Bisheng from Wuhan University attended the 2019 international conference.

Prof. Yang Bisheng was the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Yangtze River Scholars, Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education, and was listed among the 4th batch of “Ten-thousand Talents Program” of scientific leading talents. Also, he is co-chair of Point Cloud Processing Workgroup in Photogrammetry Commission of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and Editorial Boarding Member of ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from 2016-2024. His research expertise includes point cloud processing, laser scanning, mobile mapping, 3D reconstruction, UAV electric power inspection, and GIS applications.
