Cultures remaining to be guarded

(Reporter:Kanghua YangSiyuan Nie)On the evening of April 15th, the spire of Notre Dame de Paris, a famous historic building in Paris, France, collapsed in a fire. The burning of this 800-year-old monument brought sorrow and regret to not only French but also the rest of the world.

Perhaps many people are not familiar with the building, but in fact most of them have heard something or another about Hugo's novel Notre Dame de Paris and the musical of the same name. Emmanuel Macron, president of France, promised to restore Notre Dame shortly after the fire broke out, declaring that the restoration would make Notre Dame more magnificent and would be completed within five years. For this incident, Putin, president of Russia, expressed his willingness to send Russia's outstanding experts in the restoration of cultural relics to France to assist French in restoring Notre Dame to its former glory.

However, we should not limit ourselves to just state this misfortune, what we are supposed to do is to pay more attention to the hidden dangers behind all the other historical legacies. After this tragic fire, some netizens immediately compared the current heritage conservation of China's Forbidden City with Notre Dame DE Paris. For the Forbidden City, the details of conservation are truly moving and impressive. The old master repairing the cultural relics will cycle out of the Forbidden City even if he merely wants to take a cigarette break. "There is no opportunity for actual combat, and there can be no opportunity for actual combat," said a fire official in charge of security of the Forbidden City. Although China's protection of the Forbidden City is obvious to all, due to the age as well as its all-wood structure, there can be no negligence and we still have a long way to go, not merely protecting the cultural relic itself but also accelerating the establishment of three-dimensional model database of cultural relics which has made outstanding contributions to the restoration process of Notre Dame.

In fact, as a student of Wuhan University, we should aware that we are close to cultural architecture. The protection for the Forbidden City as well as other wonders is too far away for most of us, however, protecting those old constructions of our campus is actually the thing we can do in our daily life. When we are strolling around the campus, it is not an uncommon occurrence that tourists smoke and throw cigarette end here and there which is an enormous safety hazard for our campus, particularly during the annual cherry blossom festival. Although I’ve just stayed in Wuhan University for less than a year, I have been really used to her, used to her colors, sounds and atmosphere. The mere assumption is painful enough that these old and beautiful buildings would face some sufferings if our campus were on fire or experienced some other misfortune. Either there is no negligence, or the negligence will lead to a total loss. Therefore, I am sincerely hope that everyone can pay more attention to the safety of our campus from now on.
