The acrid smoke drifted slowly from downstairs to the upper floors, making it almost impossible to breathe. Students crowded into the hallways, covered their noses and mouths with wet towels, and went down the stairs quickly and orderly. It's a race against time.
In reality, it was a carefully planned fire safety drill. Both the smoke and the alarm were designed to give us a real atmosphere to take it seriously. After a brief explanation of the process of this activity, we were guided by a professional to learn the operating points of proper use of fire extinguishers in the face of fire. For example, when pulling the fire extinguisher to open the lifting ring, the handle should not be pressed hard because of tension, and the pipe of the fire extinguisher must be aimed at the source of the flame. Then the professional poured oil into an iron pot and set it on fire as preparation for the practical lesson. All students at the scene had great interest in this rare learning opportunity, and they were competing to go forward to practice and learn. Some students successfully put out the fire, but also some students let the fire bigger because of some mistakes. However, there is no doubt that these are meaningful, success is to deepen the impression of their use of fire extinguishers, failure is to eliminate their blind spots. And with the help of the fire-fighting knowledge, there will be a further safety guarantee if you experience the fire scene in the future.
After the drill, Siming Wang, the deputy party secretary of the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, made a concise summary of this event. He said that, four people were recently killed and more than a dozen students seriously injured because of a dormitory fire at a university in Nanjing which showed the lack of fire knowledge education. In his opinion, when the fire comes, people must not worry about their belongings, as a matter of fact, life is the most precious thing in one's life. As a famous saying goes, life cannot be twice, and some people are not good at even once spent. We are in the most energetic, the most creative and the most beautiful age, hence we should cherish life. At the end of his speech, he hopes that we can get used to this way of dealing with unexpected situations through this exercise, and each of us can safely and smoothly go through the wonderful four years of college life.
