About the Lecturer

Sidney M. Hecht received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and a postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin. Between 1971 and 1979, he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1978 to 2008, he served as professor of chemistry and biology at the University of Virginia. Since 2008, he has served as director of the Bioenergy Center and Professor of Chemistry at the National Institute of Biodesign at Arizona State University. Since 1992, he has been the editor of J.Am.Chem.Soc. In 1996, he won the Cope Academic Award from ACS and was selected as an outstanding scientist in Virginia. In 1998, he won the American Society of Pharmacognosy Research Achievement Award and in 2011 he received the ASU Instructor Achievement Award from Arizona State University. His research interests include the synthesis and mechanism of bleomycin anti-tumor drugs, the electron transport chain of mitochondria, and the synthesis of proteins containing unnatural amino acids. He has published more than 400 papers.
