Recently, Dr. Zhang Jiujun, an alumnus of Wuhan University, was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Dr. Zhang is the Canada Research Chair of the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), a member of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) and the founder, chairman and president of the International Academy of Electrochemical Energy Science (IAOEES).

The Fellowship of the Canadian Academy of Engineering is an honorary title awarded by the Canadian Federal Government to the most accomplished engineers representing state-level scientific achievements. As a national think tank, there are around 300 fellows elected by NRC to provide authoritative suggestions on project approval, evaluation and research of the state-level projects.

Zhang Jiujun pursued doctor’s degrees in the Department of Chemistry, School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences at Wuhan University in 1985, under the supervision of A CAS fellow Prof. Zha Quanxing and Prof. Lu Juntao, both of whom are renowned experts in electrochemistry circle. After graduation, Dr. Zhang furthered his research and development in fuel-cell catalyst, electro catalyst and sensor at California Institute of Technology, York University and then University of Northern British Columbia. In 1998, he entered Ballard (Canada), one of the top fuel-cell companies in the world, as a senior scientist, to do research on proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) power. He has also taken the lead as team manager and project manager. In 2004, Dr. Zhang was recruited by NRC-IFCI and then was awarded a Canadian Research Chair by NRC in 2013. So far, Dr. Zhang is the author of more than 300 papers and over 80 scientific and technical reports, as well as the owner of 16 American and European patents. Meanwhile, he has served as the judge for the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC, Canada), the National Science Foundation (NSF, US), the Department of Energy (DOE) Foundation and other important foundations. Therefore, Dr. Zhang is considered as “one of the most globally influential scientists” by international press.
