According to the latest Essential Science Indication (ESI) data, Wuhan University’s disciplines of Mathematics and Computer Science came into the top 1% in the global rankings, which is a historical breakthrough.
Though citations are the key factors to determine whether a discipline enters the global ranking of ESI, there are still many other factors contributing to the ranking, including both quantity and quality of papers published on SCI and SSCI, the frequency of papers cited by SCI, SSCI and A&HCI database, and so on.
It is revealed that Wuhan University has published 1053 mathematics-related papers in the past 10 years, ranking 123rd worldwide. Citations per paper have reached 3.37, ranking 223rd, higher than the Russian Academy of Science which ranks 19th globally and other 8 universities and institutes. 7 highly-cited papers made the Mathematics department of Wuhan University rank 204th, higher than Université du Littoral and other 27 universities and institutes.
Computer Science has also developed substantially. ESI data shows that among 391 institutes, Wuhan university ranks 379th. Over the past decade, 858 papers have been published related to Computer Science, with total citations reaching 2723; citations per paper are 3.26, ranking 381st in the world; the number of highly-cited papers amounts to 12, ranking 144th globally.
The information above demonstrates that papers on Mathematics and Computer Science of Wuhan University are of high quality, which has laid a solid foundation for the two disciplines to maintain and improve their ESI positions.
WHU’s School of Mathematics and Statistics and School of Computer Science have taken a series of measures to improve their teaching and scientific research levels. Two schools have introduced high-level experts and cultivated young and middle-aged teachers, encouraging them to take part in international academic cooperations. With short-term actions and long-term mechanisms, the two disciplines have made great progress and improved their international influence.
The other 12 disciplines of WHU in the ESI ranking are: Chemistry, Material Science, Clinical Medicine, Engineering Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Plant and Animal Science, Physics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science and Ecology, Earth Science, and General Social Sciences.
