On October 16, the establishment of Wuhan University’s first scientific research platform at the ministerial level was approved by the expert group organized by the Ministry of Education, marking a solid step to Wuhan University’s goal of becoming one of the first-class universities around the world.

The expert group, led by two prestigious scholars, Gar-On Yeh from University of Hong Kong and Jiayao Wang from the PLA Information Engineering University, carefully examined the current conditions and development plan for the next three years of the joint lab. They found the lab has a solid foundation and cultivates outstanding progress, in line with the requirements of the Ministry of Education.

The newly built joint laboratory is located in the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping and Remote Sensing Information Engineering in Wuhan University and is closely connected with the Collaborative Innovation Center of Earth Space Information Technology and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. After nearly three years of development, a long-term effective cooperation mechanism has been established and a good environment for bilateral and multilateral international cooperation has been formed.

The joint laboratory supports the national demand for leading edge international science and technology development. The laboratory has achieved substantial progress by taking advantage of global science and technology resources and international first-class scientific and technological talent.

Runsheng Gao, deputy director of the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Education, and Yiwei Jia, director of the joint laboratory, were present at the meeting and put forward suggestions on the future development of the lab. Professors from Wuhan University, Deren Li and Jian Gong, who also attended the meeting, were confident of the lab’s bright future..

The Project of Building Joint Laboratories through International Cooperation was issued in January 2014 by the Ministry of Education, aiming to establish a platform for teaching and scientific research cooperation through innovation in construction model, scientific research organization, personnel training and evaluation with foreign high-level universities. The plan has played a significant role in promoting research, and increasing innovative talent, fostering and speeding up the construction of first-class institutions of higher learning in the world.
