WHU joins the 12th China-Japan University Presidents Forum

On October 29, the 12th China-Japan University Presidents Forum was successfully held, aiming at establishing an open, innovative, and integrated pattern for higher education in both China and Japan. Yan Bingchen, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of the PRC, Satomi Tomoka, director of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, as well as more than 120 representatives from 43 universities and institutions in China and Japan attended the conference online. Tang Qizhu, vice president of Wuhan University, was also invited to attend the forum.

The forum revolved around two main themes, namely talent cultivation and technological innovation cooperation in Chinese and Japanese universities. Participants from both sides shared their successful experiences in talent training, as well as significant technological cooperation projects and platforms. The willingness to expand cooperation in the field of education was jointly conveyed.

As the representative of Chinese universities, Prof. Tang presented some concluding remarks at the forum. He mentioned that China and Japan had reached a consensus on further opening up to the world and deepening international cooperation. Endeavors in exploring new modes of talent training through combining online and offline education, and strengthening the construction of new platforms for international scientific research cooperation both demonstrate China and Japan’s joint efforts to seize opportunities when facing new challenges.

In his speech, Prof. Tang put forward three suggestions regarding the cooperation between Chinese and Japanese universities. First, fully develop online education, and expand the scale of joint talent training. Second, actively develop network technology and innovate the cooperation mode of Chinese-Japan scientific research projects. Third, promote sharing and cooperation to better tackle major global challenges. He also pointed out that the efforts of China and Japan in expanding and deepening cooperation and communications shall lay solid foundations and provide rich perspectives for future long-term development, especially on this occasion of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations.

The China-Japan University Presidents Forum was jointly initiated by Peking University and the University of Tokyo, and is held by Chinese and Japanese member universities in turn every two years. At present, members consist of 27 Chinese universities, organizations and government departments, including the Ministry of Education of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Wuhan University, and 27 Japanese universities, organizations and government departments, including the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. The 13th China-Japan University Presidents Forum will be held at Hiroshima University in Japan in 2023.
