Nobel laureate Michael Levitt appointed as guest professor of WHU’s Renmin Hospital

On November 11, Dr. Michael Levitt, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is appointed as guest professor of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University.

Michael Levitt, a world-renowned biophysicist, is currently a professor of structural biology at Stanford University. In 2013, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems."

As a member of the National Academy of Sciences and fellow of the Royal Society, Prof. Michael Levitt has been following the spread of COVID-19 in China and the rest of the world since its outbreak. In February, he conducted a professional analysis of the epidemic in China, especially in Wuhan, and concluded that the battle against COVID-19 in China would soon end. On the morning of November 11, Michael Levitt was invited to make opening remarks at the Second World Health Expo in Wuhan.

Prof. Michael Levitt received the appointment certificate of guest professor from Prof. Wang Gaohua, dean of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, and wore the badge. He said that he was honored to be appointed as guest professor of the hospital. He reviewed the research and results on the pandemic that he and his research team had done for 290 days since this January, and sincerely thanked China for sharing its experience in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic with the world. He particularly added that when he arrived, he saw Wuhan, once hardest hit by the virus, completely returned to normal. This is an amazing miracle. Wuhan people, especially the medical staff represented by Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, are all heroes and heroines.

Prof. Michael Levitt said that after being appointed as guest professor, he and his team would do their best to help the hospital and its Oncology Centre in "double first-class" development, and conduct extensive cooperation in basic and translational medicine research, training young innovative talents and enhancing academic influence.
