Recently, teams from Wuhan University won two first prizes, one second prize and six third prizes in the 13th National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving & Emission Reduction, a national undergraduate academic competition held by Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education. WHU also received the Excellent Organization Award.
The projects that got the first prizes are “Photoelectric water treatment device based on 3D Fe-Mo-S carbon felt electrode” and “New design of self-powered multifunctional ecological purification floating island”. The first project was created by Yang Pan and other students, under the guidance of researcher Huang Lizhi from the School of Civil Engineering and Associate Professor Zeng Hongtao from the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering. By innovating the reaction mechanism and optimizing the reactor structure, the efficient mineralization and detoxification of organic pollutants are achieved. The removal rate of COD in wastewater exceeds 95%. The “New design of self-powered multifunctional ecological purification floating island” project was supervised by Professor Gu Chang from the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering and accomplished by Ye Wai and his team. It applied solar power generation and ultrasonic algae removal technologies on the basis of current water aeration technology, and improved the water aeration link.
The project “Power and water cogeneration device based on evaporation phase change”, completed by Lei Shuting and other students, under the guidance of Professor Hu Xuejiao from the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, won the second prize. The project aims to develop a new, efficient and reliable integrated hydropower cogeneration technology using low-grade waste heat to alleviate the shortage of fresh water and electricity, and to improve the energy utilization rate.
The six projects which won the third prizes are: “An ecological beach fixing device based on natural materials”, “Hypoxia hybrid bio-system combined with advanced oxidation technologies for improving the landfill leachate treatment”, “New multifunctional ecological water diversion device”, “Design of ladder-shaped air supply cleanroom based on higher filtration efficiency and lower filtration drop air filter”, “A household energy flow regulating device based on energy router” and “Building’s ‘skin’ for heat dissipation - a new intelligent bionic cooling film”.
This competition not only promotes the importance of energy conservation and emission reduction, but also responds to the call of national energy conservation and emission reduction. Colleges in WHU took the lead in setting up the competition, established a competition committee and expert committee, and hired several excellent instructors to guide the competiters. During the COVID-19 epidemic, nearly 150 students from the School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, the School of Water Resource and Hydropower, the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Urban Design, the School of Resource and Environment Science and five other schools, together with 20 tutors, actively prepared for the competition. The teachers and students made full use of the “online + offline” mode. After half a year’s preparation, three rounds of evaluation and four rounds of training, students revised their work repeatedly in response to suggestions offered by the expert judges and instructors, and finally completed 15 entries with precise writing format, accurate application of principles and beautiful model design. The projects from WHU were praised by the judges for their beautiful design and well-prepared defense.
