2020 Scenes (China) Summit Forum: exploring new ideas on global cultural governance

On July 18th, 2020 Scenes (China) Summit Forum: Consumption, Aesthetics, and Scene was successfully held with the organization by the National Institute of Cultural Development of Wuhan University (WHU). Jointly initiated by Professor Terry N. Clark, the representative of Scene Theory and tenured professor of Sociology Department in University of Chicago, Professor Daniel A. Seale from the University of Toronto (UoT) and Professor Bo Chen from WHU, this forum gathers 13 domestic scholars of Scene Theory and aims to explore new ideas on global cultural governance.

Terry N. Clark’s speech began with the review of the global researches on cultural scene theory, followed by the further explanation to the dimension design of scenario research and the empirical analysis. He heaped praise on the constructive academic contribution from the National Institute of Cultural Development of WHU and regarded that its research achievement has played a prominent role in promoting Chinese economic and social development during Chinas transformation period. Daniel A. Seale also reviewed the cooperation between UoT and WHU on the theoretical researches of cultural scene and expressed sincere hopes for in-depth communication on scientific research and talent cultivation between two universities.

The Forum was divided into three units: the scene reconstruction of cultural China, the scene renovation of urban life, and the scene creation of the neighborhood space. The attended scholars shared their perceptions of the cultural scene model and characteristic of the Chinese city and the scene analysis of interactive travel experience. They also focused on the transition of the block scene in the post-epidemic era and the culture-driven renewal system.

In the comment section, combining with the guests speeches, Professor Fu Caiwu of WHU remarked on the recent research progress of the cultural scene in China and spoke highly of the improvement of the applicability of Scene Theory in China. Professor Fan Zhou from the Communication University of China proposed some suggestions on the research direction of the Chinese cultural scene in new era. Following was the statement from Professor Liu Shilin of Shanghai Jiao Tong University to maintain objectivity and rationality in academic research according to the demand of Scene Theory in the Chinese urbanization process during the transition period.

Chaired by Professor Bo Chen from WHU at the opening ceremony, this forum successfully attracted over 350,000 people on NetEase live platform and was considered as a precious academic feast by both scholars and audience.

It is reported that on June 3, 2019, the president of WHU, Academician Dou Xiankang and the headmaster of the University of Chicago, Robert Zimmer, signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Wuhan University and the University of Chicago. The National Institute of Cultural Development of WHU as one of the hosts of this forum also served as an essential step in carrying out this memorandum of understanding.
