The 4th Overseas Academic Week: for exchanges and mutual learning of civilization

Recentlythe 4th overseas academic week took place in Paris in the theme of “Protection and Communication of Culture and Civilization”. It is aimed at in-depth dialogues in humanity and social science and further international academic cooperation and culture exchanges.


On Octber 10th, the opening ceremony was held in Education Section of the Embassy of China in France. The Minister-Counselor, Mr Yang Jin addressed that such brand activities as “China-France-Africa French-speaking Countries Forum” and overseas academic week by WHU are pioneering and innovative activities and active response to the national strategy. He spoke highly of the leading role WHU played among universities nationwide.

Vice-president Tang Qizhu,

Tang Qizhu, vice-president of WHU said that it was WHU’s original intention to promote cross-culture co-development and mutual learning through academic communication. The collaboration between China and France has a promising future. Partners of both countries will make joint efforts to deepen exchanges and cooperation, seek solutions to problems confronting all human beings and make contribution for world civilization.

Professor Guo Qiyong

Professor Guo Qiyong Dean of WHU School of Chinese Classics, delivered a keynote speech entitled as the property of Chinese cultural spirit. He then incisively analyzed seven inherent characteristics and illustrated how Chinese civilization makes the past serve the present through a transformation.

Academician Marianne BASTID- BRUGUIÈRE

Member of the Faculty of Humanities and Politics of the French Academy of Sciences, Marianne BASTID- BRUGUIÈRE gave a report  on "cultural exchanges, mobility and mixing from China and Europe". She shared the history of cultural exchanges between China and Europe since 8 century BC before looking forward to a shared bright future.

This event was co-hosted by WHU, Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7, the National Charter Institute of France and French National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilization. This week also witnessed another three high-level cross-culture academic forums, WHU humanity and social science academic exhibitions and the annual conference meeting of Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7 Confucius Institute.

In the three sub-forums respectively held in Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7 and Le Collège de France, scholars from various fields of research shared their observations and understanding on such topics of cultural images and its interpretation, belief in the East Asia against cultural flow as well as cultural heritage and digital humanity,

It is known that the Overseas Academic Week is an important step taken by WHU to make its philosophy and other social science disciplines global. The high-end academic events held in prestigious universities abroad are expected to attract renowned scholars all around the world to exchange ideas on key academic issue and the global development, thus promoting cultural communication and academic cooperation. The former events were successfully held in University of Gottingen (Germany), University of Chicago (the U.S.) and Oxford University (the UK).
