On November 8, a delegation led by Prof. Paul Mapfumo, vice chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe, visited Wuhan University. Prof. Yuan Yufeng, vice president of Wuhan University, met with the guests in the administrative building. They discussed deepening the cooperation between the two universities, jointly planned for future development, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation.
Vice President Yuan extended a warm welcome to the delegation led by Principal Mapfumo. He briefly introduced Wuhan University’s history, establishment, disciplinary characteristics and achievements in internationalization. He especially emphasized that Wuhan University had carried out various forms of cooperation with Africa with fruitful results. With regards to talent cultivation, many African students have been enrolled and trained. In terms of scientific and technological cooperation, great efforts have been made to promote cooperation in fields such as hybrid rice, surveying and mapping, remote sensing, water conservancy and hydropower, and public health, thus facilitating Africa’s economic and social development. Prof. Yuan also said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation by both sides would contribute to the development of higher education and consolidate the traditional friendship between China and Africa.
Prof. Mapfumo expressed his gratitude for the warm reception by Wuhan University. He introduced the disciplinary advantages of the University of Zimbabwe and stated that both sides have great potential for cooperation in engineering, information science and other aspects. Through joint cultivation of students and scientific research cooperation among scholars, the sharing of educational resources between the two universities can be promoted and our international influence can be jointly enhanced.
After the meeting, Vice President Yuan and Principal Mapfumo signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two universities.
Relevant leaders from Wuhan University’s School of Urban Design and the Office of International Affairs attended the meeting.
The University of Zimbabwe was founded in 1952. It is the first university in Zimbabwe and also the largest in the country. Currently, there are more than 20,000 students on campus, enjoying a high reputation in Zimbabwe and across Africa. Wuhan University established a cooperative relationship with the University of Zimbabwe in 2017 and has successively carried out cooperation in fields such as water security and the built environment.
