As one of pioneer chemistry institutions in China, College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences (CCMS) of Wuhan University can be dated back to 1893 when Governor Zhang Zhi-dong founded a chemistry school. It was finally named Department of Chemistry under the Science-Engineering College of the newly-formed National Wuhan University in 1928. Professor Wang Xing-gong took the first Chair of the Department. In August 2000, Wuhan University, Wuhan Hydraulic Engineering & Electric Power Institute, Wuhan University of Surveying & Mapping Science & Technology, and Hubei Medical University were amalgamated to the New Wuhan University.Consequently, the College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences was organized from all the relevant academic branches in January,2001.
For dozens of years, the department has trained and brought up numerous chemistry professionals and eminent entrepreneurs. According to incomplete figures, 15 academicians of China Academy of Sciences & China Academy of Engineering either graduated from the department or taught in the department. Among them, ZENG Zhao-lun, KE Jun, PENG Shao-yi, WANG Fu-song, JI Yu-feng, ZHUANG Chang-gong, QIANG Bao-gong, YOU Xiao-zeng, CHEN Rong-ti, ZHA Quan-xing, JIANG Yuan-sheng, ZHUO Ren-xi and ZHANGLi-na are academicians of China Academy of Sciences; two of them, LIANG Jun-wu and ZHANG Gao-yong, areacademicians of China Academy of Engineering.
CCMS now has 135 faculty, with 74 professors and 51 associate professors, among which:
Academicians of China Academy of Sciences: ZHA Quan-xing, ZHUO Ren-xi, ZHANG Li-na
Distinguished Professor of the “One Thousand People Plan”: ZHANG Xu-mu

CCMS now is the key construction unit of 211 & 985 Project implemented by the state, entitled to awarding Doctor’s degree of Chemistry as the first-level discipline, having ten majors awarding Master’s degree, and establishing a center for post-doctoral studies. The College now has one State Key Discipline: Analytical Chemistry, and three Provincial Key Disciplines: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Polymer Chemistry.
We also bear 1 “111 Project” of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, 1 Innovation Team of National Natural Science Foundation, 2 Creative Groups of the Ministry of Education, and 1 Teaching Group on the national level.
National Characteristic Specialty: Chemistry
National Teaching Group: Teaching Group of Chemistry Basic Courses

Recently, the College has gained a great development in scientific research, winning several international and domestic awards. Prof. Chuan-sin CHA , an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, received the Life Achievement Award from Chinese Chemical Society in 2012. In the same year, Prof. Lina Zhang, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, won the second prize in the National Natural Science Awards and Anselme Payen Award from American Chemical Society. With the latter, Prof. Zhang became the first Chinese who won the award. The project “Materials, Manufacturing Process and Safety Technology for High Performance Li-ion Batteries” with the participation of three professors from the College, Hanxi Yang, Xinping Ai and Yuliang Cao won the second prize in the 2013 National Award for Technological Invention. Prof. Aiwen Lei, won the Prize for Young Chemists from the Chinese Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2015. Besides, during the recent years, we constantly made new breakthroughs, presenting a good momentum of the College’s development in scientific research. The Ph.D thesis “Synthesis and ProPerties of Bipolar Transport Host Materials for Efficient Phosphoreseent OLEDs”, written by Youtian Tao, directed by Prof. Chuluo Yang, was selected as one of the 2013 National 100 Doctoral Thesis, achieving a zero breakthrough. The “Zhang enyne cycloisomerization” developed by Xumu Zhang was included by Name Reaction in 2014, becoming one of the few chemical reactions named after a Chinese name. The research paper “Extra Adsorption and Adsorbate Superlattice Formation in Metal-organic Frameworks”, published in the journal Nature in 2015, with Prof. Hexiang Deng as one of its main completer, achieving another zero breakthrough of the College.
