The First Strategic and Academic Symposium between the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and Wuhan University (WHU) was held on Oct. 21. The two partners carried forward their cooperation by establishing the First Strategic and Academic Council, a collaborative effort between CASC and WHU, signing two cooperation agreements and establishing two joint research laboratories.

Present at the symposium were Li Xiaohong, President of WHU; Li Deren, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Liu Jingnan, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Zhang Zuxun, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Yuan Jiajun, Vice President of CASC; Bao Weimin, Director of Science and Technology Council of CASC; Li Feng, Chief Engineer of CASC; Fan Benrao, from the Fifth Academy (China Academy of Space Technology) of CASC; and Meng Zhizhong, from the Eighth Academy ( Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology) of CASC. Jiang Changzhong, Vice President of WHU, hosted the symposium.

President Li Xianghong extended a warm welcome to the CASC delegation, saying that CASC and WHU have maintained sound cooperation by combining industry and academia, research and application together. During his speech, Mr. Li Xiaohong gave a brief introduction about WHU and shared that WHU had recently been ranked among the Top 400 Universities in the world by Thames. He also expressed his expectation that the two parties can build an innovative platform together through strengthened cooperation, and that WHU can advance its research capabilities on aerospace technology by further integrating various approaches in this field. By doing this, WHU can support China in its evolution from a technologically big country to a technologically strong one in the field of aerospace.

Afterwards, Li Feng announced the members of the first Strategic and Academic Council. Yuan Jiajun was appointed as Director of the Council; Li Deren and Bao Weimin were appointed as Vice Directors. Strategic cooperation agreements were signed by the First Academy and the Eighth Academy of CASC and WHUand two laboratories were launched, namely, the Joint Research Laboratory of Satellite Gravity Measurement Technology and the Joint Research Laboratory of Mini-Satellite Remote Sensing Technology.

Later on, academic reports were delivered by Wang Guoqing, Vice Director of the First Academy (China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology) of CASC; Li Ming, Vice Director of the Fifth Academy of CASC; Meng Guang, Vice Director of the Eighth Academy of CASC; Yu Jin, Vice Director of China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Application; and Zheng Han, Vice Director of WHU’s Defense Technology Research Institute. Their reports discussed the variety of approaches and frameworks for their research cooperation, and set a vision for the development of aerospace science and technology in China.

In the afternoon, the CASC delegation paid a visit to the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, National Engineering Research Center for Satellite Positioning System, and School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering.

Earlier this year, on July 13, CASC and WHU signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement in Beijing, aiming at enhancing cooperation under the principle of “Equal Consultation, Common Development”, laying out the mechanism for the cooperation of industry and academia and establishing a common platform.
