On June 16, the awarding ceremony of the 2010 University Students of the Year was held in the Beijing Jiaotong University. Zhao Xiaoting from WHU was honored with the Special Recognition Award for she dedicated her life to the cause of volunteer teaching in the west of China.

The ceremony conferred ten 2010 University Students of the Year Award, twenty Nomination Award and six Special Recognition Award. Five university students from Hubei were honored at the ceremony.

Zhao Xiaoting was a student of 2008 of the School of Electrical Engineering of WHU. On July 21, 2010, Zhao Xiaoting was hit on the head by a stone rolling down from a mountain when she worked as a volunteer teacher in the remote mountainous area of Guizhou Province. Her deed has elicited extensive concern in the country. She was honored as the National Self-Giving Outstanding University Student and National Outstanding Youth Volunteer. She was selected as the candidate for the Touching the Heart of China, Hundred Outstanding Volunteers, 2010  Touching the Heart of Hubei —— Top Ten Personalities and Man of the Year for China Education, etc.
