Entering Famous Universities and Developing Transnational Friendship--WHU’s Students Attends 2014 Top University Summer Camp

On this summer holiday, nearly 100 students from different schools of WHU respectively went to University of California, Berkeley, King’s College, Cambridge University, and the University of Salzburg to participate in summer camps. During this period, not only did they master the knowledge in different fields, but also experienced the distinctive culture. In a word, this summer camp makes it possible for students to have access to the world-famous universities, and offers students a chance to have a further understanding of the exotic culture, thus broadening their international horizon and enhancing the communication and friendship among students from home and abroad.

From July 6 to August 21, students participating in the summer course of University of California, Berkeley picked their favorite subjects. They communicated and interacted actively with local students by many ways such as class discussion and extracurricular experiments. In addition to having classes, they took part in all kinds of activities organized by the university: hiking and mountain climbing, live music show, birthday party of Nobel Prize winner, alumni meeting and so on. All these activities help them know more about the campus culture of American University and improve their ability of communicating in English. Besides they took a tour around Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles and some other places, getting to know the local customs and American society.

From July 10 to August 1, students attending the summer camp of Cambridge University took the two-week courses of social science, among which The Literature History of Tang Dynasty and Wine Tasting Class interested them most. Apart from that, they went boating on the River Cam, learned western dance, attended the formal dinner and experienced the rich and colorful cultural life of Cambridge University. During the one-week tour around the UK, students paid a visit to famous sites such as the London Eye, Winsor Castle, Edinburgh and Westminster Abbey, having firsthand experience of the natural scenery and the cultural landscape. What is worth mentioning is that the flash mob dance Jasmine performed by WHU’s students in the street of Britain got wide attention from local people, demonstrating Chinese traditional culture and the vitality of the students.

From July 12 to August 10, students who took part in the 2014 Chinese-Austrian EU Summer School studied the history, politics, literature, music and education of Austria in Salzburg University and Vienna Economic and Business School. In Nouvelle Sorbonne, they attended the lecture about French political system, French Family and Marriage View and Italian Literature. They also visited the European Headquarters in Brussels and listened to EU officials to introduce EU’s purpose, development, structure and the heads of three institutions. In their spare time, students visited Salzburg, Vienna, Paris and other cities, experiencing the profound culture and the historical background.

The summer camp of world famous university is aimed to enrich the “second campus experience” of WHU’s students, improve their comprehensive quality and international competence, cultivate their intercultural communication ability and promote WHU on the international stage. In the future, WHU will develop more summer projects with top universities in the world and make more WHU’s students be edified by these top universities.
