Another year passed and the long-expected Top 10 WHU Luojia Fengyun Students award ceremony was grandly held on April 27th in the Humanities Hall. Aiming to recognize the most outstanding WHU students in various fields and with distinguished achievements, this event has been one of the most popular and most attended among the student activities at WHU. This year marks the ninth birthday of Luojia Fengyun Students Campus and it attracted more than 10,000 WHU students to take part and vote for their favorite candidates.

After several warm-up videos, the ceremony officially started. 20 candidates walked on the red carpet to show up on the stage one after another while the hosts read out their respective profiles. Every now and then loud applause bursts out from the enthusiastic audience as the candidates appeared on stage.

A detailed introduction of each candidate contained a special introductory video. Here, one can say, some had proven impressive talent.

This year, the 20 candidates were scored according to 5 key words, namely, dedication, innovation, versatility, perseverance and faithfulness.

The no 1 standard measurement was "dedication" and it valued students' achievement in the academic field. The first award recipient Xufen Cai, demonstrated her numerous accomplishments in computer science for which she had received many awards in national and international competitions. She said good time management and enthusiasm in what she did were her secrets of success. Similarly, another award winner Wu Li devoted himself to relentless chemical experiments. As a PhD student, he had conducted approximately 20,000 experiments within 2 years, that is around 25 per day in average, leading to his papers' publication in 3 top international Chemistry journals as the first author. The third winner of this group, Ke Shi, has been admitted to MIT. She established a study group, which, according to her, provides her with happiness and ideas in study and in life. Rejection letters didn't dampen her ambition, but encouraged her to find out her deficiencies and work harder to pursue her dreams.

The second group was characterized by various kinds of innovative achievements. The first award winner in this group, Peixuan Ji, showed his creation, Mimi, a popular app on mobile phones designed for lovers to enjoy sweet time together. Coming to the stage next was the Intelligent Automobile Team whose car models won the first prize in a national competition. Then leaders of the WHU Memory Master Team provided an improvised performance memorizing 20 groups of four-digit numbers put forward by the audience, at random. They memorized and reproduced these numbers within one minute. Their performance was stunning.

The next group "versatility" puts emphasis on multiple talents and all-rounded development. The award winner Keru Zhang, who had issued an original music album, performed two popular songs from his album. The audiences couldn't help but cheer for the beautiful melodies.

The fourth group "perseverance" literally required persistent efforts in pursing their ambitions. Huilv Yan expounded the chronicle and historic development of major buildings on our campus, which enriched our knowledge on these familiar spots.

The last group "faithfulness" concerns loyalty towards our motherland and the promotion of understanding among different nationalities. Baiyin Bao, a student from Hong Kong, now the chairman of the Student Union of the School of History, illustrated his role in promoting cultural understanding among young people from mainland and Hong Kong. After an impressive Xinjiang dance performance given by Guzili Nuer and her partners, the girl from Xinjiang province shared her volunteer experience of easing national conflicts after the July.5 incident in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Being a patriotic student, she takes the reconciliation work between ethnic groups as her calling and responsibility. Both awards winners are willing to work for a better understanding between Chinese people of all ethnicities and religions and to bridge the cross-regional communication.

Other amazing presentations and performances included an impromptu monologue comic show by He Wang, a top 20 award winner, brought the audiences into hearty laughter. The whole ceremony was filled with encouraging stories of these excellent students and one peppered with marvelous talent shows, which composed an exhilarating feast standing for the WHU's excellence and vitality.

After the award ceremony, WHU Party Secretary Jin Han addressed the audience, stressing that these students were not born winners; instead, they had gone through adversities and setbacks, however they showed determination and personal strength and they overcame all of these with confidence and perseverance. We should learn from their stories and all of us can achieve our own success. The one trying to wear the crown must bear it; this may be the best lesson these students have left.
