A Platform for Talents around the World--The Third Wuhan University International Forum for Interdisciplinary Sciences and Engineering

On April 9th, the third Wuhan University International Forum for Interdisciplinary Sciences and Engineering was successfully held. Over 200 young scholars from various countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong attended the Forum.

Wuhan University International Forum for Interdisciplinary Sciences and Engineering was first held in 2014. It is aimed at providing a platform for prominent young scholars from home and abroad to introduce their research progresses and communicate with each other. Besides, it is also a strategy to discover and attract young talents to join Wuhan University.

This year’s Forum adopted “forum season” beginning from December 1st, 2015 to March 31st, 2016. For those who were not able to make it to the featured forum, it was still possible to connect with Wuhan University and pay their visits during the season.

On the morning of April 9th, 2016, the opening ceremony of the third Interdisciplinary Forum was held in the main library of Wuhan University. President Xiaohong Li, also the chair of the Forum, gave a welcome speech to the delegates. According to him, Wuhan University has been working towards the ideal of building itself into one of the  top universities in the world in recent years. During this process, both domestic and international talents are indispensable. “The University is ready to ‘open its gate to the world’s top talents’— providing outstanding young scholars with convenient services and preferential policies”, said Li.

In the following section, Professor Xiaolong Xue who joined Wuhan University through the first Interdisciplinary Forum and Professor Wang Daorong shared their own experience. Wang said, “both practical and theoretical studies here are supported equally, allowing young scholars to engage in their own research interests undisturbed.” In fact, Wuhan University has implemented a series of policies to award and encourage the promising young scholars.

In the afternoon, the sub-sessions of the Forum were held respectively in 28 schools and institutions. Researchers form Cambridge, UC Berkeley, Imperial College London, City University of Hong Kong and many other universities gave presentations on the advanced studies of interdisciplinary nature.

According to the committee members, the Forum is gaining an increasing reputation in the high-level academic community at home and abroad. More and more young talents are expected to join Wuhan University in the future.
