April 22nd, the 10th Top10 Outstanding Students Award Ceremony was grandly held in the Humanities Hall, Wuhan University. As one of the most popular activities on campus, the ceremony had attracted more than 10,000 students to take part in and vote for the candidates they favored.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the award ceremony, with its theme being “the heritage”, invited previous winners to be the hosts and award presenters. As for those who were not present, they also expressed their blessings through a warm-up video.

The ceremony officially started after the warm-up video. 20 candidates showed up on the stage one after another while the hosts read out their respective profiles. Every now and then loud applause burst out from the enthusiastic audience to welcome the candidates.

The first winner unveiled was Zhang Yunqiu, the operator of iShareWHU, a WeChat public account aiming to share experience in study and life. Both she and her award presenter Wu Zhanghong shared their rough and bumpy road leading to success. Zhang said these suffering had led her to share experience with others.

When Duan Changbo, the lead singer of The Flow Theory was awarded together with the future architect Wang Chunyu, and a master of memory Liu Huifeng, he expressed how he has been inspired by his peer and buddy, “My award presenter Zhang Keru is my idol, especially in the field of music.”

At the ceremony, Duan Changbo and Zhang Keru sang Fengyun Luo, the theme song of the ceremony that composed by Zhang. They sang for the beauty of the campus and as well as their love for Wuhan University.

Regarded himself as a person who combated hackers with hacker’s technology, Li Guancheng, the seventh winner has devoted himself to the research on the network security protection. To better illustrate the insecurity of the network, he conducted an experiment by controlling an audience’s mobile phone through his own computer and even used the phone to take a photo of this audience and Li Shaminzi, his presenter. This experiment surprised the audience and even received standing ovations.

The Solemn Flag Team

The next two winners were both PhD candidates: Tang Shan, who sincerely loved chemistry and Li Longjun, who donated bone marrow to a Chinese-American. When hearing the waves of admiration, Tang Shan said with modesty, “I just made some little efforts.” His doctoral tutor, Professor Lei Aiwen, who is known for his strictness, claimed that Tang Shan “deserves this award”. For the past eight years in the lab of School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Tang Shan’s thirst for knowledge proved to be irresistible. “I just did what a scientific researcher would do. And I will do more.” This young man said with self-possession.

Then, the song Ode to the Motherland boomed through the hall and the flag team walked to the stage with sonorous and forceful steps. They unveiled the last winner of this ceremony, the Dragon Boat Team, the only team winner this year. They performed one of their training programs the “two-person pushups” to the audience, which entertained the audience and earned the team more respect.

2015 Top10 Fengyun Students and Previous Winners

After the ceremony, the Top10 Outstanding Students Award winners were surrounded by audience who loved and supported them. Yang Xiaowei, a student from School of Political Science and Public Administration, was among them. He rushed to Jin Fangliang for a conversation. “Although he didn’t become the final winner, he is my hero. He organized public welfare organization, which is quite rare in these days.”

Once she stepped off the stage, one of the winners Jiang Anji posed in front of the cameras with ease and pleasure. Anji stood out as the youngest among this year’s winners. Clad in a black-and-white A-line gown, Anji was just like Audrey Hepburn with comely looks. “Moved, honored and lucky, that was how I felt tonight.” She smiled modestly, “It has been a decade since the first Top10 Outstanding Students Award. The past ten years has witnessed its diverse splendor. And this year is also my last year at Wuhan University. This precious award kind of proved my value, for I have spent such variegated four years at Foreign Language School, at Wuhan University.” Finally, she encouraged all students to “have a life of your own and follow your path”.

Pan Yueran, one of the staff members, had devoted her effort into this event for four years. “It’s my last year preparing for this ceremony. Actually, I began to plan this ceremony when it was in its heyday while I was at nadir. The Outstanding Students Award Ceremony gave me an opportunity to get close to those big names.” She talked about how she was inspired by Fu Duanling, who was a winner of the 8th Top10 Outstanding Students Award. “This ceremony is not just a showtime for those so-called worthies. It’s a carnival for all WHUers.”

The ceremony ends in a euphoria of content and excitement. Ten years passed, with one hundred prize-winners writing their unique epic, with all students grown to be mature and successful. We are looking forward to the next decade, to the prosperous future of Wuhan University.
