Lin Tao: Eyes on the World
Author:Gao Shuang  Date:2016-06-07  Clicks:

Lin Tao, a professor as overseas talent employed by the the School of Electrical Engineering at Wuhan University, has rich experiences of overseas studies and international research. He worked as the researcher of Central China Grid Company Limited and some prestigious research universities including University of Florida in the US, University of Bath in the UK and Nagasaki University in Japan. Besides, he was invited to be the associate editor of key overseas academic journals in electrical engineering such as International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems (England) and other academic periodicals. He was also the keynote speakers of many important international academic conferences and forums.

This January has witnessed the release of the book Case-Based Reasoning: Strategies, Developments and Applications,  issued under his general editorship published by Nova Science Publishing House.

Many Years ago, Prof. Lin published a conference paper in English, discussing the application of case-based reasoning into power system control, which was not a popular research target at that time. To his surprise, it proved to be an important area, as the big data has become an area of focus in electrical engineering research.

“My prospective research is highly recognized by my peers. Therefore, I am given the honor to accept an invitation from the publishing house to be a chief editor and work with so many renowned scholars from both home and abroad, to finish this book”, says Prof. Lin. When it comes to this new release, Lin reiterated the significance of the international influence on scientific research. From his perspective, prospective research with innovative methods lays the foundation for scholars to “go global” and get recognition from experts domestically, internationally and other scholars. This approach is complemented by an extensive international academic exchange which can spur them to improve research methods and inject new inspiration..

As a scholar with abundant experience in international academic exchange, Lin attaches great significance to the expansive global view. “There exists huge differences among researchers from different countries on the way of viewing and solving problems, which can lead to the collision of ideas and the realization of future potential.

“Going global brings new insights”, Lin believes that innovation and foresight are the two criteria of a researcher’s competence. The abundant resources of heated research will appeal to many researchers and draw their attention so that they can get involved in the research work. However, research can be spoiled due to the duplication and waste of resources when clusters of researchers and experts swarm in. “It is inefficient to do all the research with the similar or even the same methods. Scholars should be settled and ready to solve the problems at hands and foresee the possible new problems in social development..

As for talent cultivation, Lin insists on the participation in international communication and exchanges of both undergraduates and graduates, such as exchange programs for undergraduate students, high-level international academic conferences for graduate students and internships in famous enterprises and research institutions for Ph.D. students. “Only in this way can students have access to new research methods and draw upon others’ strengths to offset their own shortcomings and enhance efficiency”.

Lin tends to share about his experiences of participating in international conferences, public speaking, etc., during the English lessons for postgraduates and doctor students, which inspire the students to participate in international exchanges. He further explains that teachers should inform students of various channels to the outside world and remove their fears of overseas study in the class.

"It enhances the international engagement of Wuhan University to motivate students and teachers to take part in international academic communication positively by various policies and provide them with access to the elite universities and academic institutions around the world,” Lin concludes.
