10 graduate students from different schools of WHU have been selected as the year 2014’s academic stars. Their spirit of innovation and love for scientific research impress other WHU students to go further and achieve more on their research.
Shuihua Jiang:
At the world’s highest dam, Jinping hydropower Station in Yalong River, the team which includes Shuihua Jiang, a 2011 doctoral student from the School of Water Resources and Hydroelectric Engineering, played an important role in the slope reinforcement project of the dam. This is a tiny achievement that makes him proud.
During the research, Jiang overcame various difficulties with amazing willpower. He said, “Once you’ve made a choice, you have to stick to it without regret.” When asked why he devoted himself to scientific research, he replied that “it is our duty to do things with diligence and passion, and we shouldn’t waste the most important time in our life”.
Hong Lv:
We are now in the Big Data era when information security issue is of great importance. This is exactly the problem Hong Lv is dealing with currently. Hong Lv, majoring in Information Science, is a doctoral candidate of the Information Management School, whose research direction is Information Policy. He said that buried in piles of papers, consulting literature, thinking and writing is the reality of life for him. In Hong’s perspective, the road of scientific research is a journey with thorns and flowers, and he would rather owe his success to diligence rather than genius. The moment when he is just about to finish one paper, he claims, it is the pleasant moment for him.
Kang Yuan:
Attracted by economic law, Kang Yuan, a 2012 doctoral student of the Law School, had started the research in a related field when he was an undergraduate student. He casts his focus on group funding in early days, having lots of papers published in prestigious journals. His research results catught the attention of the industry. Some financial institutions invited him to cooperate with them.
Being outgoing and upright, Yuan is also active in student activities. He served the Journal of Postgraduate Studies at WHU, first as an editor then he became chief editor and president, having organized several large-scale academic forums. Now as an exchange student at the University of California, Berkeley, he enjoys himself even though faced with heavy research tasks. Yuan is fond of cooking in his spare time. He said, “Your happiness in life is determined by the attitude you have , to a great extent”.
Xuan Pei:
Xuan Pei is a 2012 doctoral student of the College of Literature, majoring in Aesthetics, which he views as a worldly ideal. Pei holds that a scholar should always keep a calm and tolerant attitude, as well as being good at self-adjustment. He thinks it is beneficial to seek for help when doing research. Pei is eager to bring his contribution to the development of humanities, even with his meager strength. It is his expectation that Literature and Art can be absorbed into everyone’s mind.
Xin Han:
“We are ordinary people, but every ordinary person has an extraordinary world,” said Xin Han, a 2013 doctoral student of the College of Pharmacy. From the moment he stepped into the laboratory, he began the research on a new type of asymmetric catalytic method. Experimeningt the method for a long time, he failed again and again, but couldn’t find out the reason. Then he accepted his supervisor’s advice to slow down the research process and engage in further reading. Finally he got the inspiration from a pre-existing experiment and the solution he came up with, worked. But when Han found out that a Singaporean scholar had already published a similar paper, he got frustrated and almost gave up. However, braving the setbacks, he successfully found a way out and published his research in SCI magazine.
Hao Ding:
Hao Ding is a 2011 doctoral student of the School of Geodesy and Geomatics. He shuttles between home and laboratory and gets fully engaged in scientific research day after day. It seems plain and boring, but Ding enjoys himself doing research.. As for the successful publication of his papers, or praises from others, he takes them with a peaceful mind. Ding thinks that the so-called success and failure should be owed to different evaluation criteria and the achievement one gets is an acknowledgement just for a certain period of time.
Quan Zhang:
Being a doctoral student of the GNSS Center, Zhang is a straight A student, counting scientific research as the core of his life and spending most of the time on experiments as well as discussions with team members. Under the guidance of Professor Chuang Shi and Professor Xiaoji Niu, he has been involved in a number of scientific projects, attended international academic conferences and actively participated in social practice in related industries, all of which helps his scientific ability to achieve a qualitative leap.
Dong Liu:
“Perseverance comes from passion.” This is the motto of Liu, a doctoral student studying in the College of Chemical and Molecular Science. He thinks there is no easy way on the road to success, and scientific research could never be achieved overnight. During his research in transition metals, it was common for him to spend most of the day in the laboratory. At last, after modifying and correcting the results over and over, he succeeded in his experiment which showed a promising application prospect and thus value for the metal industry. Liu’s time does not go only onstudy, but he is also fond of singing and sports. When faced up with difficulties during scientific research, he is always holding an optimistic attitude.
Wei Sun:
The graduate student of the School of Water Resources and Hydroelectric Engineering, Wei Sun, is a person with strong will and firm determination. For instance, once he gave up on the whole model he had built and restarted from the beginning, progressing step by step. It took him almost two months before he finished the project. What he learns from that experience is that doing researches also requires the courage to persist, besides having the necessary knowledge. “What you’ve achieved only belongs to your past. Once I choose the scientific research, I won’t shrink back.” Lately, Liu is preparing for further study abroad.
Jingzhou Cao:
Jingzhou Cao, a graduate of the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, is the youngest among the candidates. However, he has already published one EI paper as the first author, one in core Chinese journals of science and technology, and obtained one patent as the first author, two as the second authors as well as two software copyright certifications as the first author. In the aspect of life planning, he divided his university time into several stages with respective goals and achievements. Due to his passion for this major, Cao intends to continue his study and apply for a PhD program, which would be his next destination.
