Since its establishment, WHU has cultivated batches of graduates year by year making great contribution to all walks of life. Encouraged by excellent alumni, undergraduates are thinking about one thing: how to be outstanding. That’s also the reason WHU launches its annual Top Ten Outstanding Students Award, which hunts for the most excellent students in diversified areas on campus. The ten winners excel because they stand out and make a difference among their peers. Their stories also inspire other students by telling them that everyone can make a change.
Share WHU to You: Zhang Yunqiu
Zhang Yunqiu’s passion lies in sharing learning resources and helping more students perform better in their study.
“I once failed a final exam of advanced mathematics and I thought if only there had been someone sharing with me his experience of learning mathematics. From then on, an idea of sharing useful and practical study experiences came to my mind.” said Zhang Yunqiu, the admitted applicant of Economics at the Department of MIT. She founds a Wechat official account named "ishare WHU" as an online social platform With almost 3000 long-term subscribers, about 100 original articles read by 5000 people, and learning resources of more than 30 courses, “ishare WHU” has exerted a huge impact on students’ ways to study as well as their attitudes towards lives.
Competing or sharing? Zhang chooses the latter. This platform creates an environment that allowes for shared learning and intellectual growth inside and outside the classroom At the end of every article, there is always a sentence saying “one of the dreams of the author is to pass on love and support.” Staying inspired, logging in the public platform day and night and answering every question , Zhang Yunqiu has gradually made her dream a reality.

They are Still Training: The WHU Dragon Boat Team
As the only team nominated on the list of 2015 WHU Top Ten Outstanding Students, the WHU Dragon Boat Team hopes to convey the spirit of unity and perseverance of WHU. Concerted effort leads to a faster Dragon Boat. This is the belief the teammates have held since their entrance to the WHU Dragon Boat Team. ”If you have once seen our training, you will understand our belief.” said a teammate.
Every day when the sky is darkening and the buildings around lightened ,with the continual sound of “Dong, Dong…”,the WHU Dragon Boat Team is still training. Their training time is between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm every day, including summer holiday and even rainy days.
Zhou Jiuqiang, captain of the team, once commented on their rowing of the boat: “No worry, no fear. What we need is to release our strength and passion.” However, they are not always so inspired because most of the teammates face the stress coming from the conflict between study and training. How to overcome the thought of giving up?” You may find it an excuse as long as you remember that there is always someone in the team more diligent than yourself.”said a teammate.
In 2015, the WHU Dragon Boat Team defeated HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology) in the 4th Wuhan “TwinStar” Friendly Dragon Boat Race, and proved their strength. “Victory comes from pressure. To some extent, the fear of losing the competition is our motivation.”said Captain Zhou. In the coming competition this year, their goal is to retain the leading position with a 3-0 aggregate lead.

Born Scientific Researcher: Tang Shan
If Tang Shan is sure about one thing in his future, it is that he will continue diving into his very interested scientific research. As a Ph.D. in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Tang Shan has published 11 journal articles indexed by SCI(Scientific Citation Index).
“I’m not a perfectionist but more diligent than others.” he made such a comment on himself. Tang’s “diligence” comes in the form of standing for a whole day in a white gown and transferring the reagent from one test tube to another.
Zeng Li, one of Tang’s peers in laboratory shares an impressive story. “I was going back to sleep after a non-ending experiment at midnight when Tang stopped me and asked me to finish it with him. Although I was a little annoyed, I was surprised at the successful result the next morning.” Tang Shan has regularly pushed the cohort to seize the right moment to do experiment. His passion and diligence, commitment to focused scientific research, and deep connection to peers have contributed subtantially to the laboratory.
Tang has also experienced hard times in research when he was an undergraduate.” Confidence is the key to take me out of shadow.” he said, “I believed that others exceeded me just in the time but not in the ability.”
Upon learning that he has been awarded with WHU Top 10 Outstanding Students, Tang Shan shares his secret in scientific research, “Thinking is in the first place whereas practice is also important. Both of them are indispensable.”

A Paradox?
“You know what? I wasn’t confident about the democratic voting process to some extent at the beginning. We are repeatedly told to protect fairness, paradoxically, it seems that most of us will vote for our acquaintances. That’s why many people doubt whether the student leaders will be absolutely front-runners.” said Gu Tianpeng, one of the staff members for the Top 10 Outstanding Student Award.
The fairness is no doubt the most important thing for such a popular activity and it also means a challenge for WHU Ziqiang Institute Website, the organizer wchich has made a difference in the nominating process this year. “In this 10th anniversary of WHU Top 10 Outstanding Students awards, on one hand we highlight the theme of ‘Inheritance’ ,on the other hand we want students to find the outstanding students around them so that we have enlarged the range of nomination.” said Gu.
Has the result lived up to their expectation? “The result is reasonable but beyond expectation, showing that those who are making changes for themselves and their peers are the real winners.” he said, “Only when you do something that can evoke others’ sense of identity can you be remembered and make others be willing to canvass for you.”
