Professor Yu Keping from Peking University was invited to delivere a speech on The political analysis of the traditional Chinese society in Luojia Forum in October. Luo Yuting, vice-chair of the University Council of WHU, and Ding Huang, dean of the Political Science and Public Administration School, attended the lecture.

Professor Yu Keping, a prominent scholar in politics, was the former vice director of the China Central Compilation and Translation Bureau. Now professor Yu is the dean of the School of Government and China Politics Studies Centre at Peking University. Professor Yu is widely recognized at home and abroad due to his remarkable achievements in politics and sociological studies, and he was selected as one of Foreign Policy Magazine’s 100 Global Thinkers in 2011 for his efforts in enlightening the public. His representative work, Democracy is not a bad thing, is many readers’ first access to political theories.

Professor Yu delivered his speech, The political analysis of the traditional Chinese society, by analyzing the internal logic between traditional Chinese society and bureaucratic system. He pointed out that the bureaucratic system, as the mainstream value of traditional Chinese society, was a severe barrier to our society and the process of capitalism. The power-led resource distribution system affected every corner of people’s life, including social manners, values and cultures. This mindset remains harmful until today.
This hard-edged and humorous speech attracted a large audience. All seats were occupied an hour before it started. Levgeniia Rozhenko, a Ukrainian student from the Political Science and Public Administration School, said the lecture was very helpful for her to gain knowledge about the political aspects of the traditional Chinese society.
The lecture hall was packed with keen audience, including professors, WHU students and admirers who came due to Luojia Lecture’s reputation.
The Luojia Lecture, named after WHU’s landmark, Luojia Hill, was established during the 115th anniversary ceremony of WHU. It is a high-level academic lecture mainly held in the Sakura Castle Library lecture hall. Luojia Lecture is devoted to inviting world-class scholars and Nobel Prize laureates to share wisdom with students through the art of speech. It has become a key activity in WHU within the field of humanities and social sciences.
