The Fifth China-UK Higher Education Young Talent Alliance (HEYTA) Student Exchange Event hosted by Tsinghua University was held on September 4-6 in Beijing, China. It featured 33 students from ten affiliated institutions of higher education and marked a return to offline activities since HEYTA 2019.

The program combined academic lectures with cultural activities, offering students diverse perspectives to understand and experience Chinese and British culture. Participants were also encouraged to share their insights into and feelings about Chinese and British culture through speeches, group discussions and other forms.

The event featured three academic lectures covering the themes of Digital Humanities, Comparative Literature, and Intercultural Communication. The students displayed keen attentiveness and engaged actively during these lectures.
In addition to the lectures, Tsinghua University had designed an interesting cultural program. In addition to visiting the campus of Tsinghua University and the Tsinghua University Art Museum, which has a long history and beautiful environment, the Chinese and British students also had the opportunity to explore cultural landmarks in Beijing, like the Forbidden City and the 798 Art District. Thanks to this program, students could appreciate China’s rich cultural heritage, feel the modern innovative culture, and experience the legacy of the Chinese civilization in the midst of historical changes.

Under the theme of ‘exploring the veins of history and recounting the intermingling of civilizations’, students delved into the beauty of humanities. At the closing ceremony, student representatives shared their learning achievements in groups.

This year’s participants came from Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Exeter, the University of Oxford and others, covering undergraduates, postgraduates and Ph.D. students specializing in various fields such as literature, history, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, law, sociology, religious studies, and intercultural studies. The event left a deep impression on the students and helped build bridges of communication between Chinese and British culture.
