“Successful launch of Luojia-1 A Satellite” included in the Ten Great Events of China Remote Sensing

On March 22, the China Association of Remote Sensing Application (CARSA) announced that the successful launch of the Luojia-1 A satellite has been selected for inclusion in the ten great events of China remote sensing.

Organized by CARSA in association with Taibo.cn the Journal of Remote Sensing, and others, the criteria for selection put emphasis on identifying the “most beneficial and impactful” events that occurred in China remote sensing in 2018. It aims at selecting the events which lead the way and which best represent innovation in the development of the industry. 

Luojia-1 A satellite is the first multi-functioning low-orbit and micro-nano science experimental satellite with both remote sensing and navigation devices. It was developed by WHU in 2015 and launched into orbit on June 2, 2018. Its main loads are the nighttime light imaging load and the satellite-based navigation enhancement load. The satellite is mainly used in social-economic parameter estimation, major event assessment and national security, as well as low-orbit satellite-based navigation signal enhancement tests.

The nighttime light remote sensing resolution of Luojia-1 A satellite is 130 meters, which means it can clearly identify roads and blocks, outshining the US DMSP/ OLS’s 2.7-kilometer resolution and NPP/VIIRS’s 740-meter resolution. Up to now, the nighttime light remote sensing data has distributed more than 180,000 scenes of nighttime light images to more than 3,000 users in 22 countries and regions (including US, Germany, France, UK, etc.), providing free data services to various users of different industries in the world, and playing an important role in estimating socio-economic and national security parameters. The team from WHU which proposed Luojia-1 A, verified for the first time to the world the theory and method of signal enhancement using low-orbit satellites for medium-high-orbit GNSS. It also verified that the pseudo-range and carrier phase measurement accuracy of low-track enhanced signals are 3m and 7mm respectively, which can be used to improve the availability of the GNSS system and significantly shorten the convergence time of high-precision navigation and positioning.

The Luojia-1 A satellite has made breakthroughs in the design and application of nighttime remote sensing, and in the satellite-based navigation signal enhancement method. It has also developed a number of key technologies with competitive intellectual property rights. It supports the remote sensing satellites of China, leaping from natural terrain monitoring to social activity monitoring. With the development of the Luojia-1 A satellite, China's remote sensing application in socio-economic parameter inversion assessments is no longer reliant on data from foreign satellites. It can further support the global development of China's Beidou-3, with its leading significance in the research and application of micro-nano satellites as well as the development of geographic information science of geomatics.
