Men’s Team Badminton Gold Goes to China at the 7th CISM Military World Games

In the morning of October 23, WHU Student Sports Center witnessed the finals of the men’s team badminton and China gained the gold medal with a complete victory, Thailand and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea silver and bronze respectively. The gold medals to the Chinese athletes were presented by Professor Dou Xiankang, President of Wuhan University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Five teams from China, Thailand, ROK, DPRK and France entered the final, competing for the ranking on a round-robin basis. On the evening of October 21, China won the first match against DPRK to run up a 5-0 aggregate score, Singles athletes Lu Guangzu, Li Shifeng, Zhao Junpeng, doubles players Tan Qiang/Zhang Nan, Liu Cheng/Ju Fangpengyu all defeat their rivals with a 2-0 score. The next morning, conforming to the similar match lineup except substituting Wu Xin for Zhao Junpeng, China continued the victory of the same 5-0 match score against France. In the afternoon, Wang Yilv, who just returned from the Denmark Open, joined the group play with Liu cheng in the second doubles match. Again, China hit a 5-0 result outscoringThailand.

On 23rd morning, China took the title race in competing with the strong opponent ROK men’s team. At the beginning, Zhao Junpeng managed to better ROK athlete Heo Kwanghee with the score of 10-21, 21-13 and 21-14 in the three sets of men’s singles. Then, Tan Qiang/Zhang Nan outscored Park Kyunghoon/Kim Hwitae at a 21-16, 20-22 and 21-18 resulted in the following men’s doubles. When the third singles play started, Lu Guangzu fleetly defeated Go Kyungbo in the first two sets, so that China is undoubtedly the final winner at the advantage of 3-0 great score ahead of schedule.

Though the outcome secured, it is necessary to proceed the next two matches according to the rules. In the end, as Liu Cheng/Wang Yilv and Li Shifeng both outscored smoothly in the doubles and singles, China achieved the final success at a 5-0 overall score. Consequently, China’s athletes win the championship in the men’s team badminton with a complete victory of the whole four rounds.

From 23rd afternoon, the exciting badminton events to come will be men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Then, Zhang Nan and Li Xuerui, the eye-catching Olympic champions with high expectations, will form a temporary partnership in the mixed doubles.
