On March 28, an international video conference between China and African countries was held in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University on the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. Members of the medical community from Kenya and Tanzania had a fruitful discussion with Chinese medical professionals.

China’s success on COVID-19 prevention and treatment has attracted increasing attention from the rest world, especially Africa where this disease is sweeping the whole land. Dr. Mohamed Salim have studied in Wuhan University for 12 years, and obtained a master degree and a doctor degree in the First Clinical School of Wuhan University. He is now an endocardial physiologist at Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa. Dr. Mohamed contacted his postgraduate mentor, Professor Tang Qizhu, also the vice president of WHU. At the proposal of Professor Tang, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University has held several academic exchange activities.

According to CCTV news, seven more cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Kenya on March 28, bringing the total number of confirmed cases there from 31 to 38, with one death, one recovery and 36 cases under treatment. On March 28, the health minister in Zanzibar, Tanzania, announced one more confirmed case. There are now 3 confirmed cases in Zanzibar, and 14 across the country, with one recovery and no death.

In the afternoon of March 28 (Kenyan time 9:00 am-11:00 am), Dr. Hemed Twahir, director of the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa, Dr. Swaleh Misfar, director of cardiology, and Professor Nasirrudin Jamal, the director of Aga Khan Hospital, along with medical personnel from Nairobi and over 75 people from the community of cardiology, general internal medicine, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, critical care medicine, administration, etc. participated in the video conference. Dr. Mohamed Salim organized and hosted the international video conference.

How to manage and screen patients in outpatient and emergency departments? How to save critical patients in ICUs? What is the protective procedure for medical staff? How to treat mild cases? What kind of patients can be treated in the general wards and what kind of patients should be admitted to ICUs? When should patients be transferred to ICUs? How to prevent “super spreaders”? What about the discharge criteria? At the beginning of the meeting, African experts put forward a series of urgent questions. Experts from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University shared detailed answers and guidance.

After the meeting, “Internet Hospital” staff of Renmin Hospital sent the video of the meeting to Dr. Salim for peers unable to attend in person for further study and discussion on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. African counterparts expressed their gratitude to the Chinese experts for their sharing and guidance, which they declare is hopefully to be applied to immediate clinical practice. They will keep in touch via Wechat groups, e-mail and other channels.

Virus can spread across borders, which therefore can only be defeated by the joint efforts of the international community. China and Africa countries are sincere friends, trustworthy partners and good brothers, offering consistent supports and assistances to each other. Renmin Hospital will continue to share experience acquired in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of COVID-19 with the rest world for the final victory in the battle against COVID-19.
