Yao Liangzhong elected as academician of Academia Europaea

Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) recently published the list of newly elected academicians of 2022 on its official website. Professor Yao Liangzhong from Wuhan University’s School of Electrical Engineering and Automation is included as an elected academician.

Among the newly elected academicians of 2022, Professor Yao is the only Chinese scholar in the field of physics and engineering sciences.

Yao Liangzhong is the incumbent dean of the Smart Grid Research Institute. His research focuses on diverse areas including renewable energy grid connection and operation control, direct current transmission, scaled energy storage & renewable energy hydrogen production, and AC/DC distribution system & dynamic demand response. He has undertaken a number of national key research and development program projects and smart grid united funded projects, participated in the National Natural Science Foundation of China International Cooperation and Exchange Program and major science and technology projects (topics) of the State Grid Corporation, as well as other projects. More than 350 of his papers have been published in domestic and international conferences and journals. Professor Yao has applied for more than 60 international and domestic patents, and he is the co-author of five monographs. He has been awarded IEC 1906, the first prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Award, the second prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Beijing and China Electrotechnical Society, the second prize of Power Science and Technology Innovation, and ten other awards.

Professor Yao serves as IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, and the chief member, vice chief member, convenor or member of the China Electrotechnical Society, the Chinese Energy Society, the Chinese Electrical Engineering Society, Conference International des Grands Reseaux Electriques (CIGRE), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and other domestic and international organizations. He is the associate editor of CSEE Journal of Power Energy & Systems, IET Journal of High Voltage, and the editorial board member of the Journal of IET Renewable Power Generation, the Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, the Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering, Grid Technology, Power System Automation, and other journals.

Established in 1988 by The Royal Society and National Academy of Sciences in European countries, Academia Europaea is also called the European Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences with its headquarters in London. It is one of the most extensive and influential scientific organizations internationally across geographic and academic fields with the highest academic status, with 23 subordinate departments, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and science and technology. The academicians of Academia Europaea come from 35 European countries, mainly elected from academicians of the National Academy of Sciences in European countries, representing scientific elites and academic authorities. Its foreign academicians are scientists who closely cooperate with Europe. Since its establishment, about 5,500 members of the Academia Europaea (MAE) have been elected, including nearly 90 Nobel laureates.
