Recently, the Collaborative Innovation Centers of the year 2014 selected by the “Project 2011” was published and the Geospatial Information Collaborative Innovation Center led by WHU, was on the list.

The Geospatial Information Collaborative Innovation Center, which was jointly established in 2012 by Wuhan University in cooperation with Tsinghua University, Beihang University and some other core collaborative units, was selected second on the list in the category of industry. The center has been managed by Li Deren, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The center works on meeting the national needs in developing major technological projects such as the High-resolution Earth Observing System and the Second-generation Satellite Navigation System. Based on the principles of combining talent cultivation, discipline construction, technology and development with industrial application, and guided by system and mechanism innovation, aiming at providing the fast, exact and fine geospatial information, the center carries out collaborative innovation in the fields of the spatial information acquisition, the earth space-time benchmark, spatial network, spatial communication, earth observation technology of remote sensing, satellite navigation, geospatial information service and so on. So far, it has accomplished a series of major scientific and technological achievements generating international impact and brought together a large number of outstanding technological talents. In this way, it has made a great contribution to the development of our national geospatial information industry.

The relative officer of WHU mentioned that WHU would make use the opportunity of the implementation of the “Project 2011” to push the comprehensive supplementary reforms, improve the education quality, and promote the cultivation of talents, as well as the development of scientific research and disciplines.

The “Project 2011” is the abbreviation of “Project of Enhancing Innovative Ability Among Institutions of Higher Education”. It is the third national program after the “Project 985” and “Project 211”, aiming at enhancing the innovative ability of talents, and accelerating scientific researches. By constructing four types of collaborative innovation models concerning the major needs of expanding the scientific frontiers, protecting cultural heritage, breeding professional industries and promoting the regional development, it deepens the mechanism and system reforms, transforms the innovation methods and establishes the foothold towards becoming a world first-class center. This year 24 centers were selected in this project nationwide, among which 4 were expanding the scientific frontiers, 5 about cultural heritage, 11 about professional industry and 4 about regional development.
