On January 9th, six projects by Wuhan University (WHU) were awarded State Science and Technology Awards at the 2016 National Science and Technology Awards Conference held at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. Two of the six projects hosted by WHU won the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. The remaining four projects also set remarkable records, including a first and a second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award, a second prize of the State Natural Sciences Award and a second prize of the State Technological Innovation Award.

The project of “The key technology and application of monitoring and controlling the stability of cracked roadways’ surrounding rock in deep mines”, led by professor Liu Quansheng of WHU, won the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. Focusing on the monitoring, simulation and control of the stability of deep-cracked soft surrounding rock, this project put forward the rheological stress recovery method in the measurement of geostress of deep-cracked soft surrounding rock and invented a multi-pressure sensor and positioning system. The project also introduced a quantitative value and physical simulation system method to predict and analyze the expanding distortion, and developed the technique of step-by-step controlling deep broken and soft surrounding rock jointly along with the technique of controlling floor heaves. The achievements have been widely used in deep coal mines and transportation tunnels, greatly promoting the overall technology level of monitoring and controlling the stability of cracked roadway’s surrounding rock in deep mines, as well as social and economic benefits.

Another project, “The development and construction of the National Geographic Information Public Service Platform-- Map World”, hosted by WHU, also won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. By collecting the geographic information of China, Map World could provide authoritative and efficient online geo-information services to its users. This project has served many significant roles, such as safeguarding the security of national geographic information, promoting the sharing of government information resources, improving the application of geographical information and boosting the development of the geographic information industry.

Furthermore, research project “The main contents and key technologies of constructing ecological water-saving irrigation districts”, in which WHU participated as the second leading unit, won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award; the project “Theories and methods about the synchronization, control and recognition of complex dynamic networks”, led by Professor Lu Junan of the School of Mathematics and Statistics of WHU, won the second prize of the State Natural Sciences Award; the project “Multi-interfacial lightsITCDC LED light optimization”, in which Zheng Huai, an associate professor of WHU’s School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, participated as a team member, won the second prize of State Technological Innovation Award; and the project “Key technologies and application of national e-government spatially collaborative decision-making service”, in which professor Guo Qingsheng of WHU’s School of Natural Resource and Environmental Sciences took part in, won the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award.

This year, the State Preeminent Science and Technology Awards were given to 2 scientists—Zhao Zhongxian, a researcher from the Institute of Physics of the China Academy of Science (CAS), and Tu Youyou, a medical sciences researcher from CAS. 42 projects and individuals received the State Natural Science Awards; 66 received the State Technology Invention Awards; 171 received the State Science and Technology Progress Awards. 6 foreign experts, mainly from international organizations, were awarded the International Science and Technology Cooperation Awards.
