Major achievements get Wuhan University included on list of "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in China’s Higher Education Institutions in 2020”

Wuhan University has been selected as one of the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in China's Higher Education Institutions in 2020" by the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education. The project “key technologies of high-precision and intelligent remote sensing data processing system for earth observation from space” led by academician Li Deren from Wuhan University was selected for inclusion. This is the second time that the achievements of academician Li Deren's team have been included in this list.

The team conducted the research under the leadership of academician Li Deren for 15 years, centering on the goal of making China's high-resolution remote sensing system easy to use while making good use of it. They made important progress relying on space-air-ground integrated earth observation system in the closing year of the high-resolution earth observation system project (high-resolution special project) in 2020. The results have solved the difficult technical problems of high-precision global positioning by satellite remote sensing and high-precision positioning and attitude determination by air to ground remote sensing, as well as the key scientific problems of real-time intelligent service of remote sensing information. The results have been applied to more than 40 satellite processing systems, including high-resolution satellites, realizing real-time positioning, radiometric correction, geometric correction and other processing of domestic satellite time-sensitive targets in orbit for the first time. Scientists used the luminous remote sensing technology to evaluate the changing rule of resumption of work and production from South to North in the prevention and control of COVID-19, achieving remarkable results.


High-resolution earth observation is used to obtain effective information through high-resolution remote sensing to meet the needs of economic construction, national defense construction and people's livelihood. It represents a new field of scientific frontier and information industry, reflecting a nation’s core competitiveness. In order to develop an independent high-resolution earth observation system, the project of earth observation with high resolution was included in the national medium and long-term science and technology development plan in 2006.


The selection of the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in China's Higher Education Institutions in 2020" has been held every year since 1998. Each year, 10 outstanding achievements with significant scientific and technological progress are selected from colleges and universities across the country, aiming to promote the overall level of science and technology in colleges and universities and to enhance the ability of scientific and technological innovation. This event is highly valued by colleges and universities in China.
