Chen Xi, one of the top ten WHU Fengyun Student of 2013 who has finished Bachelor Degree, is now a first-year postgraduate student of the Electronic Information School, doing some research on marine survey recently. When it comes to Fengyun Student, Chen Xi, with a humble smile on his face, said that it referred to students who had prominent achievements in certain fields and he was lucky enough to be chosen as a representative of all those outstanding students.
All-around Winner
Generally, many other Fengyun Students demonstrate excellent performance in specific domains. In comparison, Chen Xi is the one who has more comprehensive abilities which enabled him to achieve great success in various areas such as academic competition, scientific research and student affairs management. Chen Xi has four authorized patents and three software copyrights. Meanwhile, he has published papers in EI and SCI and was also the Vice President of the Student Union in his faculty. In particular, winning the national first prize in “Challenge Cup” -National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works by Race-was a highlight which contributed to the honor of Fengyun Student. Looking back on the process of the competition, Chen Xi, with satisfaction in his eyes, said that at the very beginning, he didn’t expect the prize he won, but he just wanted to have a try as he had nothing to lose even if he got no prize. We can tell from his confident voice that youth demands bold, persistent experimentation and aspiration. Chen Xi must have known better than most of us the necessity of trying something challenging.
Growth Diary
On the way of Chen Xi’s growing up, his father and his Chinese teachers influenced him most. In primary school, his father kept asking him to report his daily life at school every evening when he was returning home. Chen Xi’s father particularly liked to listen to his complaints about classmates or the inappropriate arrangement in school and how he adjusted his emotions and solved those problems. Chen Xi also appreciated that his Chinese abecedarian requested him to practice calligraphy. The rest of his Chinese teachers always took special care of him in helping him revise his compositions. Those experiences were perhaps common sense, but had a positive influence on Chen Xi’s life, facilitating his remarkable ability to express ideas, analyze and solve problems.
Recipe for Success
Chen Xi is an early riser. He gets up early almost every morning, fact that saved him from waiting in long queues for breakfast and hastily finding a seat in library. This way he can save time and throw himself into his to-do list. During holidays, Chen Xi travels a lot. The destinations were mostly somewhere full of historical and cultural connotation such as Longmen Grottoes, Yunnan and Suzhou where sometimes he creates poems to express his feelings and perceptions about someone, something, or some special moment so that he could find peace and record the inspiration of life.
“Getting things done in an effective way demands scientific methods and preeminent tutors”, Chen Xi said, taking his basketball training as an example， He has been playing pick-up basketball games for four years in university and has never accepted formal training before. After only a month of training with a professional basketball coach, his skills have improved so rapidly that he could have been mistaken for a professional player. He had in fact adopted a proper way of playing, rather than a simply arbitrary method to play basketball. In addition, the second requirement of self-improvement is to conquer the most difficult current setback. The process may be painful and require a tremendous amount of effort. However, once you get over it, other ordinary problems in the same field will just be trivial puzzles to crack and by that time, you would have already stepped into a higher level.
When confronted with pivotal occasions and taking important responsibilities, Chen Xi is always fully charged and has the motivation and passion to accomplish them perfectly, eventually impressing people with extraordinary performances. As an old Chinese adage says, a specialist only masters his own field. Chen Xi is now trying to be top in one specific area and is looking for opportunities to go abroad for further education. He never stops pursuing his goal and dream of youth and life, and perhaps one day, his courage and faith will make a difference to the world.
