This Saturday, November 5th, the semi-final and final of the ‘12th Wuhan University Golden Fall Culture Festival Chinese debate contest’ were successfully held in the lecture hall of the School of International Education. The competition consisted of three rounds, with 13 teamsof international students from 20 different schools and 40 different countries taking part in the first round, which has been held one week earlier.
The topic for the first round was “When studying abroad, you have to adopt to the foreign culture”. Each team had to draw its’ point of view, whether having to argue against or in favour of the statement.
The best four out of those 13 teams qualified for the semi-final. The topic for the semi-final was “Economic growth and environmental protection can be linked”, an obviously very difficult topic to discuss in Chinese, and it required good preparation by the contestants, as well as language proficiency.
Especially due to latter, two teams, which already competed against each other in the semi-final, faced each other again in the final.
There, the topic was “Internet is helpful for your studies”, and after being given one hour for preparation, the teams held a stunning debate, demonstrating both their proficiency in the topic as well as their excellent level of Chinese language.
The jury, consisting of Chinese language teachers of both Wuhan University and Hubei University as well as a member of the WHU English Debate team, presented, together with several leaders of SIE, the certificates to the contestants. The presentation of the prizes for the winners is scheduled to be held during the opening ceremony of the Culture Festival, taking place on November 19th.
All in all, it was a very successful event, both a great opportunity to practice debating in Chinese as well as to know many new friends, but also an interesting and amazing discussion for the audience.
