In this lovely season tinted with deep autumn hues, the 31st Golden Autumn Drama Contest of Wuhan University was successfully held in Meiyuan Playground on November 2, 2019. The contest consisted of team competition and individual competition, attracting 15 teams and 8 personal participants in total.

This year, School of Economics and Management is the laureate with their work Crossing The River for its excellent combination of patriotism and Chinese traditional culture. Kill That Young Man presented by School of Journalism and Communication and Who Broke This Heart by School of Information Management win the second and third places respectively. Tang Yudi is the champion among the individual performers.

The heroine singing Farewell My Concubine

Crossing The River presented a love story in the early days of the newly established People’s Republic of China in 1949. The heroine in the drama is a Chinese opera singer, and her husband is a soldier. The heroine’s favorite opera is Farewell My Concubine, a famous traditional Chinese opera, which sketches the romantic yet tragic love between Xiang Yu, Hegemon-King of Western Chu during the Chu–Han Contention period (206–202 BC) and his lover Consort Yu. Responding to the call of our country, the heroine’s husband had to set out to fight against invasion. Unfortunately, he died in the battle. In the end of the drama, looking back upon her husband’s glorious death for the country, the heroine cherished their memory and told their story to her granddaughter. The students brought alive and soul-stirring love story to the audience

The title Crossing The River has two implications. On one hand, it refers to the Wujiang River where Xiang Yu put an end to himself. On the other hand, it indicates the Yalu River where thousands of solders dedicated their lives to the freedom and peace of our country. The braveness of Chinese soldiers coincides with the resolution of Xiang Yu in the traditional opera. Crossing The River demonstrates the patriotism of Chinese people after the founding of New China and passes on such a quality in the new era. It is also an exquisite gift from WHUers to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

Other teams also gave their brilliant performances. Kill That Young Man from School of Journalism and Communication adopts an avant-garde method to present the difficulties and misunderstandings that a patriotic young man encounters in contemporary society. Who Broke This Heart from School of Information Management questions about what is the real love for our country. All these works echo the themes of the times and intrigue the audience to reflect on the relationship between the individual and our home, as well as our country.

The Golden Autumn Drama Contest is an impressing section of the WHU Golden Autumn Art Festival series launched in 1987. It has become an iconic cultural event on campus. Every year, it unveils fresh ideas and splendid plays, embracing all the students who would like to involve in the art feast .
