On February 18th, Nature Nanotechnology, the international authoritative journal with an impact factor of 37, published online a paper of Professor Cao Yuliang's team from School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Wuhan University. This paper introduces the team’s research prospect on the combination of battery materials technology research and its application.

This paper is entitled Bridging the academic and industrial metrics for next-generation practical batteries (DOI:10.1038/s41565-019-0371-8). Supported by national key research and development program, this study is co-accomplished by Cao Yuliang’s team, the Argonne National Laboratory and the Northwest Pacific National Laboratory

Chemical batteries have been widely applied in such important fields as electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage and triggered a reform in modern society, which is inseparable from the close cooperation between academic research and industrial application. More efforts and choices, however, are required to make this transfer a reality. Taking industrial application as guidance in setting the directions and conditions of academic research is an effective approach to an assuring transfer from academic achievements to applications in related industrial fields.

In order to bridge academic research and industrial applications of battery materials, this paper discusses some crucial yet easily overlooked battery parameters. This paper describes the battery parameter indicators corresponding to academic research and industrial application, such as the reasonable calculation of anode energy density, voltage hysteresis, initial and cycle efficiency, inactive battery components and positive/negative mass ratio. Some suggestions are put forward with these parameter indicators so as to meet practical demands for lab battery technologies and direct their industrial application.

Cao Yuliang’s team  pay continuous attention to the research of chemical power application basics with outstanding achievements in energy storage sodium ion battery system and battery safety electrolyte. Their research achievements have been published in well-known journals, including over 30 journals with impact factors above 10. Their papers were cited by SCI more than 12,000 times, 19 of which were selected as ESI high cited papers.
