Wuhan University signs cooperation agreements with University of Notre Dame

On April 19, Wuhan University (WHU) and the University of Notre Dame (ND) held a virtual ceremony to sign cooperation agreements, signalling the start of a formal cooperative relationship between the two universities, covering study abroad programs. Prof. Wu Ping, vice president of WHU, and Dr. Michael Pippenger, vice president of ND, signed a memorandum of understanding on inter-university cooperation and a study abroad agreement.

Prof. Wu Ping offered a general introduction to WHU, its academic strengths and achievements in recent years, and looked back on the exchange history between the two universities. She pointed out that both universities are comprehensive with a wide range of disciplines of distinctive advantage, laying the foundation for further cooperation. The formal establishment of the cooperative relationship is a new starting point for friendly relations. In the future, the two universities should encourage student exchanges and scholar visits, and aim for cooperation in areas including talent training.

Dr. Michael Pippenger introduced the history, faculty scale, discipline characteristics, international development and other related aspects of ND, and acknowledged the achievements of the friendly relations between the two sides. He said that the cooperation between the two universities would be significant in the context of ND having initiated a new round of strategic plans for development. He further expects that WHU will become a crucial partner of ND in China. The two universities could further explore comprehensive cooperation in dimensions like sustainable development, in fields including engineering, humanities and social sciences, and in areas such as student and faculty exchanges.

Other attendees at the signing ceremony included Jonathan Noble, vice provost of ND, officials of the WHU Office of International Affairs and teacher representatives of WHU.

Founded in 1842, ND is ranked in the top 20 private universities in the USA, and 183rd in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2022. At present, ND has an enrollment of about 12,000 students and a wide range of disciplines including natural sciences, engineering, arts, law, economics, and architecture.
