On September 4, the president of Wuhan University, Dou Xiankang, and vice president, Li Fei, met with group led by Kang Seung-seok, the newly-appointed consul general of South Korea in Wuhan.

Principal Dou welcomed Kang’s visit. He expressed his admiration for Kang’s inauguration in Wuhan during such a critical time fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. He also articulated gratitude to the alumni in South Korea for their active raising medical supplies for Wuhan during the epidemic. Dou said that the mutual assistance between China and South Korea in the times of difficulty had set a model for global cooperation. Later, Dou introduced the development of WHU in recent years at different angles, including high-level talent recruitment, campus facilities construction and undergraduate education. He also indicated that WHU would continue providing adequate support for international students cultivation given the fact that South Korea has the second largest amount of international students studying in WHU.
During the visit, Kang said that he was touched to see the new semester was embarked on successfully under the leadership of President Dou as well as the joint efforts of teachers and students, and expressed his sympathy to WHU’s dedication in combating against the pandemic. He also felt gratified due to the fruitful result of the exchanges between WHU and South Korea and thanked WHU for its attention and support to the exchanges with South Korea. Kang Seung-seok added that 2020 is the year of the 28th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea and the 10th anniversary of the founding of South Korean Consulate in Wuhan. He believed that the cooperation between China and South Korea as well as South Korea and Wuhan will be enhanced greatly under the collective efforts of the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged opinions on further promoting courses of Korean language teaching and arrangements about South Korean students’ returning to WHU.
It is reported that WHU has been receiving South Korean students since 1994. Until August 2020, 1,866 South Korean students have successfully graduated from WHU. There are currently 136 South Korean students studying in WHU. South Korea is also a popular country where WHUers choose to study in and do their cultural exchanges. In the past five years, more than 100 students in WHU went to Korea University, Yonsei University and other universities in South Korea for exchange.
