On the night of Sept 28th, Fu Xiangdong, an American specialist of Wuhan University, was awarded Bian Zhong Prize by the Government of Hubei Province. He was one of the 10 outstanding figures in Hubei Province who won the prize in 2015. The award ceremony, which was held together with the 66th celebration of the National Day, is designed to honor the foreign specialists who have made great contributions to the economic and social development of Hubei province. Fu is not the first one from WHU to win such a great honor. Together with him there are 12 specialists who have also won the prize since it first came out in 1994.
Professor Fu established Chinese-American Joint Laboratory in the School of Life Sciences in WHU since 2004, and he also introduced new research methods in the genomic era such as deep sequencing technology and other new biological technologies to WHU professors and students. Besides, the research group led by Fu has published a great number of high-quality papers including the one on biology top journal Cell. Fu has acted as an important connection between WHU and the overseas institutions in the field of biology for the past ten years. By organizing academic conferences, seminars and inviting famous experts to give speeches, Fu has led the younger researchers to the newest area and driven up the development of biology research at WHU.
