At 7:00 p.m. on April 25th, the Top 10 2013 WHU Luojia Fengyun Student list was announced at an award ceremony in the Humanities Hall’s main lecture room. The Top 10 students denoted as Luojia Fengyun Students were composed of a diverse group. The annual event seeks to recognize outstanding student representatives to serve as role models for fellow students. The activity now in its eighth year has continued to gain prominence year after year.

After a warm-up video opening the award ceremony, two student hosts came up to the stage and started introducing the 20 candidates for this year’s Luojia Fengyun Students. Led by elegant usherettes, the 20 students walked on the red carpet one after another while the hosts were reading out their respective profiles. Their entry into the main hall was greeted by loud applause from an enthusiastic audience.

Mengfei Xie, one of last year’s winners, unveiled the first Fengyun Student of this year. With ten numbers on the big screen, each representing a Fengyun nominee, Xie chose number two, unfolding the first winner of the night: ‘the Lifesaver on the Bus’. Linli Le received the award on behalf of a team of five students who managed to save a passenger struck by a sudden epileptic seizure on a bus, an incident that received nationwide attention. Le also taught the audience the basic CPR methods by performing on a volunteer.

As the first award recipient, Le chose the second number, Binghong Lai: a prolific inventor with over 50 inventions, 20 of which are patented, covering a wide range of fields including automobiles, furniture, and lifesaving gear. He also introduced one of his research topics to the audience: using urban construction waste to build man-made islands. Lai’s interest in invention emerged from an elective course he took in his second year: Innovation and Practice under Professor Wang, who has had three other students win the award and who attended this year’s ceremony.

The next two winners were Min Fang and Guangyue Zhang. Fang is a PhD candidate in medical school who has distinguished herself as both a student and a group leader. Among her accomplishments, she started her own regional education institute in 2010. Zhang, the Wuhan University Memory Association president, demonstrated his strong memory by reciting three phone numbers on the spot. The Memory Association has fostered nine World Memory Masters and their methods have benefited generations of Wuhan University students.

The fifth winner was Hongxu Ma who gained national prominence for winning the Tiancai Zhidao, a national talent show targeting outstanding university students. Ma demonstrated his charisma by bringing out both laughter and applause from the audience.

After an intermission, the ceremony continued by announcing Duanling Fu as the sixth winner. Fu, the first student ever from the Foreign Languages and Literature School to receive the award, is a top student, a prominent team leader, and an active promoter of intercultural communication. Her impromptu consecutive translations of her own awarding profile brought a large applause. After her came Xi Chen, a student leader most prominently as Student Union vice president and a winner of many awards on behalf of WHU. He also gave a brief presentation on his research.

The eighth winner, Minzi Lisha, brought particular cheer when she spontaneously imitated the hostess of the television show: Kaimen Daji. After her came Qingquan Lu, a doctoral student who has gained international recognition for his research that avoids metal residue in synthetic chemistry. A touching moment came when the host surprised him by playing a congratulatory recording by his long-time girlfriend in Canada.

The last award recipient was Ze Pan, a debate master who gave an impromptu speech named Fengyun.

A special title was awarded to Yilin Li and Gao Zhou: Luojia Nature Ambassadors. Both students have made significant contributions WHU ecological records. Zhou, with a passion for traditional Chinese medicine, compiles the Luojia Plants Anthology, while Li, a bird watcher, compiles the Luojia Birds Handbook.

At the end of the ceremony enthusiastic students came up to get autographs and group photos.
