The First Antarctic Tide Station Changcheng Station Established
This January, Changcheng Station, the Antarctic’s first permanent tide station with instant data transmission equipment and the second Antarctic tide station, was officially launched. The No. 28 Chinese Antarctic scientific team, including two members from WHU, completed the station. This project was lead by 25-year-old post doctorate An Jiachun, a research member of WHU’s Chinese Antarctic Surveying and Mapping Center.
The station’s facilities include a seabed water gauge, land data recording and processing equipment, and a data transmission cable connecting land and sea equipment. Data recording sea level changes will be sent back to China through VSAT, a satellite at the station, providing fruitful information for researchers to make further research and analysis. It will provide information on southern sea level changes and global climate change by accumulating data for years and sharing information with other countries.
According to An Jiachun, the tide station, just like a weather forecasting station in the polar regions, can provide timely tide forecast, helping ensures the safety of maritime navigation as well as contribute tidal change data about waters near Changcheng Station for scientific research.
This station is the second breakthrough since the first station Zhongshan was established.
