WHU alumnus elected as foreign member of NAE

The US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has announced its latest cohort of members, with Wuhan University (WHU) alumnus Peng Fangzheng among those elected as a foreign member.

Peng Fangzheng, 1979 alumnus of the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Wuhan University.

Peng, who graduated from WHU's School of Electrical Engineering and Automation in 1983, was recognized for his contributions to high-power electronics in advanced grid control and energy conversion.

After earning his bachelor's degree from WHU, Peng obtained his master's and doctoral degrees from Nagaoka University in Japan. He has held academic positions at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Michigan State University. In 2018, he joined the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) at Florida State University (FSU) and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. He is currently a professor at the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in high-voltage, high-power converter technology and its applications in power and energy systems.

Founded in 1964, the NAE is one of four national academies in the United States. Election to the academy is among the highest professional honors in engineering, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to research, practice, and education in the field
