WHU interdisciplinary team wins 2025 Red Dot Design Award

July 31, 2025

An interdisciplinary team led by Associate Professor Deng Jun from the School of Urban Design at Wuhan University (WHU) has won the 2025 Red Dot Design Award for their project, HandX, a dexterous five-finger hand for humanoid service robots.

Associate Professor Deng Jun from the School of Urban Design at WHU poses with the award.

The project received the "Innovative Design" award – marking the first time a core component from Hubei province's humanoid robot program has earned a major international industrial design honor.

Designed for service-oriented humanoid robots and robotic arms, the dexterous hand stands out for its lightweight, modular, customizable, and multifunctional design. It integrates expertise in product design, mechanical engineering, control systems, and user experience, addressing common issues with traditional bionic hands such as visual similarity and limited interactive capabilities.

The project brought together faculty and students from WHU's School of Urban Design, School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, and School of Information Management. Students played key roles in optimizing the structure, enhancing sensory feedback, and improving user interaction.

The team aims to build on WHU's interdisciplinary strengths to further advance intelligent design, human-machine interaction, and service robotics, contributing to talent development and breakthroughs in core technologies.
