WHU international students try their hand at Chinese calligraphy

December 31, 2024

Wuhan University began preparations for the Chinese New Year on December 14 with an event featuring the writing of spring couplets.

The celebration was a collaborative effort between the Hubei Central South Metro Media Group and the School of International Education, attracting over 60 international students to a lecture hall transformed into a hub of cultural exchange and creative energy.

International students use calligraphy brushes to write the character "Fu", which means "good fortune" or "blessing" in Chinese.

The event commenced with Zhang Jun, a calligrapher from the Hubei Provincial Calligraphy Association, providing an insightful introduction to the evolution of Chinese characters, tracing their development from ancient oracle bone script to the fluid strokes of cursive script.

Poetically describing calligraphy as "Tai Chi on paper" and demonstrating fundamental calligraphy techniques, Zhang guided the students in crafting the auspicious "福" (Fu or blessing) character and composing traditional spring couplets.

For many attendees, this was their first encounter with Chinese calligraphy, yet their eagerness was palpable. With the support of faculty and members of WHU's Calligraphy Society, the students swiftly mastered the rudiments and produced their own calligraphic pieces. Their couplets, rich with aspirations for abundance in the upcoming Year of the Snake, exuded warmth and optimism.

Wuhan University host a Spring Festival couplet writing event on December 14, with more than 60 international students taking part.

The event culminated in a showcase of the students' calligraphic works, which were met with resounding applause from their peers. The creations will grace subway platform doors in cities such as Wuhan and Changsha during the Spring Festival, disseminating the joyous spirit and blessings of the season to a wider audience.
